Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Additive manufacturing has emerged as a transformative approach for producing complex, high-performance materials and components with unprecedented design flexibility. Recent advances in powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition, binder jetting, material extrusion, vat photopolymerization, and hybrid manufacturing are enabling the fabrication of metals, ceramics, polymers, composites, and functionally graded materials with tailored structures and properties. In crystalline materials, additive manufacturing offers unique opportunities to control solidification behavior, crystallographic texture, grain morphology, defect structures, phase evolution, and microstructure–property relationships. These features are especially important for applications in aerospace, biomedical devices, energy systems, tooling, electronics, and advanced structural materials.

This Special Issue aims to provide a platform for recent research on the processing, characterization, modeling, and performance evaluation of additively manufactured materials. Contributions focusing on process optimization, microstructural control, crystallization mechanisms, defect mitigation, post-processing treatments, mechanical behavior, corrosion and oxidation resistance, fatigue, wear, and functional properties are particularly welcome. Studies combining experimental work with computational modeling, machine learning, in situ monitoring, or multi-scale characterization are also encouraged. The Special Issue seeks to highlight current challenges and future directions in additive manufacturing technologies and to promote a deeper understanding of how processing conditions govern crystal structure, microstructure, and final material performance.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Crystals is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
