Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The intersection of Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) with materials science, particularly in the realm of surface analysis and processing, is rapidly transforming research and industrial capabilities. This Special Issue invites submissions that explore the innovative applications of ML and AI techniques—including deep learning, neural networks, genetic algorithms, and predictive modeling—to solve complex challenges related to coatings, surface treatments, and interfacial phenomena. We aim to showcase cutting-edge research that utilizes these computational tools for tasks such as real-time process monitoring and control, predicting surface properties (e.g., hardness, corrosion resistance, and adhesion), optimizing deposition parameters, and the automated interpretation of surface analytical data (e.g., SEM, XPS, and AFM). Papers focusing on both theoretical advancements and practical implementations in various surface technologies, from thin films to functional coatings, are highly encouraged. This collection will serve as a vital resource for researchers seeking to leverage the power of smart technologies to accelerate the design, manufacturing, and characterization of advanced surfaces.

This Special Issue particularly welcomes contributions that detail novel applications and methodological breakthroughs across the following potential topics:

  • AI-driven design and optimization of coating compositions and deposition parameters.
  • Predictive modeling of surface properties (e.g., wear, friction, corrosion, and adhesion) using ML algorithms.
  • Real-time process monitoring and control in surface treatment and coating manufacturing (e.g., PVD, CVD, and thermal spraying) via deep learning.
  • Automated interpretation and analysis of complex surface characterization data (e.g., high-throughput analysis of SEM, AFM, XRD, and XPS spectra).
  • Applications of materials informatics and big data in discovering new coating materials and systems.
  • Integration of AI for quality control and defect detection in coated components.
  • Utilization of genetic algorithms and evolutionary computing for optimizing multilayer film structures and interfacial engineering.

We encourage researchers to submit articles on both fundamental studies and industrial case studies that integrate computational intelligence within the coatings community.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
