Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) and environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) are advanced surface protection technologies designed for extreme environments. Their performance depends heavily on the composition of ceramic topcoats and bond coats, as well as the deposition methods used. TBCs, such as yttria-stabilized zirconia and rare-earth zirconates, provide excellent thermal insulation, while EBCs, like rare-earth silicates or BSAS, offer strong chemical resistance. These coatings are typically applied using EB-PVD, APS, or CVD techniques. During fabrication and service, complex phenomena such as sintering, phase transformations, and thermal mismatch can occur. The coatings’ mechanical integrity, microstructural stability, and resistance to thermal shock and corrosion are essential for ensuring durability and safety in aerospace and energy applications.

We invite researchers to contribute to this Special Issue on “Thermal and Environmental Barrier Coatings: Innovations for Enhanced Durability in Extreme Conditions”. This Special Issue aims to provide a unique multidisciplinary forum for the discussion of recent advances in the fabrication, characterization, and application of composite coatings and candidate materials, with a strong emphasis on corrosion resistance, thermal stability, and mechanical and chemical stability in harsh service environments. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Design and synthesis of thermal/environmental barrier coatings (TBCs/EBCs);
  • Composite coatings with ceramic or metallic reinforcements;
  • High-temperature oxidation and corrosion resistance;
  • Functional coatings for aerospace, energy, and industrial applications;
  • Processing techniques such as plasma spraying, CVD, PVD, sol–gel, and laser cladding;
  • Microstructural analysis and performance evaluation under simulated service conditions;
  • Multiscale modelling and life prediction of coatings;
  • Coating/substrate interface behaviour and failure mechanisms.

We look forward to your valuable contributions to this Special Issue.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
