Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

  Just as petroleum-based packaging poses a threat to the environment and living organisms, alternatives to traditional polymers are being sought and developed. It is expected that up to 30% of all packaging could be replaced with environmentally friendly thin films and coatings. Such solutions reduce the amount of waste (the effectiveness of the loop recycling is 8%), micro- and nano-plastics  (new plastic packaging are not produced) and greenhouse gases (footprint) during the production, which is lower compared to classical polymers. These films and coatings could be even produced from waste, for example, from green waste (cellulose films) and shells of crustaceans (chitosan). They could be tasteless or colorless, and some additional substances (for example nutritional) can be provided to their matrix. Different food products can be wrapped or coated, effectively allowing to prolongation of the shelf-life of fresh food, sometimes in special conditions, even of 30 days or more, and in cases of foods with lower amounts of water, the effect is the same as traditional plastics. They protect against food spoiling caused by microorganisms and physical factors (additional barriers of the food-product). In the future, the market for thin films and coatings of bio-based polymers could expand to other industrial branches, such as medicine, pharmacy, chemistry, etc.

  This Special Issue “Environmentally Friendly Thin Film and Coatings for Packages“, is specifically dedicated to researchers/scientists from areas including food packaging, food chemistry, microbiology, materials, and all derivative subjects.

  The Special Issue will mainly publish original research papers, review articles, and short communications in the following areas:

Bio-based films and coatings for packaging;

Biological food packaging material development;

Biological coatings or films material formulations;

Biological films and coatings with nano-particles;

Multilayer/multicomposite bio-thin films and coatings;

Edible coatings or films;

Physical and microbiological properties of food bio-packaging coatings or films;

Antimicrobial packaging systems;

Shelf life of packaged foodstuff;

Microbial stability of food during storage, handling and transportation;

Span-life and food safety;

Sustainable and green strategies for packaging;

Condition of degradation/decompose of biomaterials and biopolymers;

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.
