Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Photocatalytic coatings and composites have emerged as effective solutions for environmental remediation in urban settings. By utilizing light-driven catalytic processes and photo-induced chemical reactions, various organic and inorganic pollutants can be degraded, microbial growth inhibited, and sustainable air and water purification strategies enhanced. The integration of photocatalytic technology into building materials, infrastructure, and air and water treatment systems presents a sustainable and energy-efficient approach to mitigating environmental pollution and enhancing public health.

This Special Issue, “Development and Application of Photocatalytic Coatings and Composites”, aims at bringing together the latest advancements in the synthesis, characterization, and real-world applications of photocatalytic coatings and composites. We welcome original research articles, reviews, and perspectives that explore innovative photocatalytic materials, novel deposition techniques, material modifications to enhance catalytic efficiency, and practical implementations of these materials in various industries.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Advanced Photocatalytic Materials: Novel semiconductor catalysts, doped metal oxides, hybrid nanocomposites, carbon-based photocatalysts, and carriers for photocatalytic nanograins.
  • Surface Engineering Strategies: Thin-film deposition techniques (e.g., sol–gel, CVD, ALD, or plasma-assisted methods) and nanostructuring approaches for enhancing photocatalytic activity.
  • Photocatalytic Composites: Functionalization of composite materials for air and water purification, NOx removal, urban pollution control, or other aspects of environmental remediation.
  • Self-Cleaning and Antimicrobial Coatings: Development of surfaces with enhanced resistance to fouling, bacterial adhesion, and organic contamination.
  • Mechanistic Studies and Performance Evaluation: Advanced characterization techniques, reaction kinetics, and modeling approaches to optimize photocatalytic efficiency.
  • Scalability and Real-World Applications: Challenges in large-scale production, durability testing, environmental impact simulations, and commercialization of photocatalytic coatings and composites.

This Special Issue provides an opportunity for researchers and industry experts to share novel insights into the development of next-generation photocatalytic surfaces and their impact on sustainable technologies. We encourage interdisciplinary contributions that bridge fundamental research with practical applications.

We look forward to receiving your valuable contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
