Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Sustainable food packaging coatings have seen significant advancements in response to the environmental challenges posed by traditional plastic packaging. The key focus is on creating materials that are biodegradable, recyclable, and derived from renewable sources. These coatings aim to replace harmful plastics while maintaining food safety and extending shelf life.

Recent innovations include biodegradable coatings, often made from plant-based polymers like starch, cellulose, and chitosan, which decompose naturally, minimizing landfill waste. Edible coatings, made from substances like proteins, lipids, and polysaccharides, provide an additional protective layer directly on food, enhancing moisture and oxygen barrier properties while also being safe for consumption.

Another notable advancement is the development of active and intelligent coatings. These coatings not only protect food but also include antimicrobial properties that help extend shelf life and prevent spoilage. Some intelligent coatings are designed to change color to indicate food freshness, providing consumers with visual cues on product quality.

These coatings are applied to various food products, including fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy, and baked goods. They provide essential protection against moisture, oxygen, and microbial contamination, which helps maintain food quality and reduce food waste. Moreover, the use of renewable and sustainable materials in these coatings aligns with the global push for reducing plastic pollution and lowering carbon footprints.

Sustainable food packaging coatings are transforming the food industry by offering eco-friendly alternatives that enhance food safety, reduce environmental impact, and support a circular economy. These innovations are paving the way for more sustainable and responsible food packaging solutions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs).
