Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue, "Advanced Repair Strategies for Ceramic Coatings", focuses on innovative approaches to extend the service life of materials through defect repair. Potential research directions include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Investigation of intelligent self-repair systems, such as glass-phase formation and oxidation-induced sealing, which autonomously heal microcracks at elevated temperatures. Studies could focus on optimizing parameters such as self-healing temperature, oxygen partial pressure, heating rate, formation kinetics of oxide layer, and phase transformation kinetics to maximize repair efficiency, eventually achieving the mechanical properties.
- External energy-assisted repair, covering laser remelting, microwave sintering, and plasma-enhanced deposition techniques for localized damage recovery. For example, establishing transient thermal stress models through finite element analysis, characterizing interfacial bonding strength using nanoindentation, and performing submicron-resolution repairs via femtosecond laser ablation, among others. Studies could address critical challenges such as thermal stress management, interfacial bonding enhancement, and localized damage recovery at the sub-millimeter scale.
- AI-driven predictive maintenance, focusing on developing machine learning models for defect detection and repair protocol optimization. Studies could integrate machine learning with multi-physics simulations to create adaptive defect detection and repair optimization algorithms.
Collectively, these approaches form a cohesive "design–optimization–intelligent maintenance" framework, driving ceramic coating repair technology toward higher efficiency, sustainability, and automation.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
