Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Since its conception in the 1980s, palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling has revolutionized the practice of organic synthesis in both academic and industrial laboratories. The protocols enabled a regiocontrolled formation of carbon–carbon and carbon–heteroatom bonds at impressively mild conditions. Applications of the Heck reaction to asymmetric synthesis have led to an unprecedented rise in the step-economy of numerous total syntheses of complex natural products. In the following decades, the scope of palladium-catalyzed reactions continued to grow exponentially, encompassing the initially challenging synthesis and elaboration of heterocycles.

At present, palladium catalysis has reached a state of maturity, and the well-established fundamental concepts can be applied toward addressing the most pressing challenges in organic synthesis.

This Special Issue aims to highlight current research trends in palladium catalysis by focusing on (i) selective C–H functionalization of complex molecules; (ii) catalytic asymmetric additions (i.e., hydrofunctionalization) of unsaturated substrates; (iii) design of “green” processes including decarboxylative cross-coupling; (iv) development of one-pot multi-step and multi-component reaction sequences; (v) applications of palladium in the context of  cooperative catalysis; and (vi) innovative applications to total synthesis of biologically active molecules. However, all recent advances in palladium catalysis, including relevant mechanistic and theoretical studies, will be important subjects for this Special Issue.
