Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Photocatalytic technologies have emerged as promising and sustainable solutions for addressing critical environmental and energy challenges through the utilization of solar energy.

Recent advances in semiconductor-based photocatalytic materials have enabled significant progress in photocatalytic hydrogen production, carbon dioxide reduction, degradation of organic contaminants, and remediation of emerging pollutants such as microplastics, perfluoronated compounds, pharmaceuticals, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals.

The development of novel nanostructured photocatalysts, hybrid organic–inorganic composites, biochar-supported materials, and engineered heterojunctions has substantially improved visible-light absorption, charge separation, interfacial charge transfer, and photocatalytic efficiency.

In particular, Schottky, p-n, Z-scheme, and S-scheme heterojunctions, as well as photocatalysts modified with nonmetallic elements and carbonaceous materials, have demonstrated enhanced stability, selectivity, and resistance to photocorrosion. Furthermore, advances in photocatalytic systems for wastewater treatment have shown great potential for the degradation of dyes, pharmaceuticals, antibiotics, endocrine-disrupting compounds, and plastic-derived pollutants, while photocatalytic CO2 conversion offers opportunities for the sustainable production of value-added fuels and chemicals.

Despite remarkable achievements, challenges related to catalyst design at the atomic scale, mechanistic understanding, reactor engineering, long-term stability, and large-scale implementation remain significant.

This Special Issue aims to highlight the latest developments in advanced photocatalytic materials and systems for environmental remediation and sustainable energy production, covering fundamental studies, innovative material synthesis, mechanistic investigations, and practical applications that contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Catalysts is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
