Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Hydrogen is widely recognized as a key energy carrier for achieving a sustainable, carbon-neutral future. However, current hydrogen production still relies predominantly on fossil resources, highlighting the urgent need for cleaner and renewable alternatives. In recent years, remarkable advances in materials science have enabled the development of highly efficient photocatalysts, electrocatalysts and photoelectrocatalytic systems for hydrogen generation from renewable resources, including water, biomass-derived compounds, wastewater, and solar energy. Innovative materials, such as semiconductor photocatalysts, nanostructured materials, heterojunctions, carbon-based materials, bio-derived materials, porous frameworks, and multifunctional catalysts, have significantly improved light harvesting, charge separation, catalytic activity, stability and overall hydrogen production efficiency.

We are pleased to invite researchers from academia and industry to contribute their latest findings to this Special Issue.

This Special Issue aims to highlight the latest advances in the design, synthesis, characterization, and application of advanced materials for sustainable hydrogen production. Particular emphasis will be placed on innovative catalytic materials and processes for photocatalytic, electrocatalytic, photoelectrocatalytic, and biomass-assisted hydrogen production.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Semiconductor photocatalysts and electrocatalysts for hydrogen production;
  • Nanostructured, hybrid and multifunctional catalytic materials;
  • Carbon-based, bio-derived and porous functional materials;
  • Heterojunctions and interface engineering;
  • Photocatalytic, electrocatalytic and photoelectrochemical water splitting;
  • Biomass conversion and wastewater valorisation coupled with hydrogen generation;
  • Natural organic photosensitisers, bio-derived functional materials;
  • Computational modelling, artificial intelligence and data-driven catalyst design;
  • Techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment of sustainable hydrogen technologies.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Catalysts is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
