Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Cities have always been smart: they are humanity's greatest inventions, incorporating the latest technologies of their time. Technically, a smart city is a complex network of smart buildings and facilities as well as their production, distribution, and consumption. How to define the digital information of a building and successfully implant it into the urban ecosystem is a fundamental condition for the success of a smart city. We need to create a novel built environment model that includes human and environmental information that extends the existing building information model. Combining this with new analytical techniques and design methods is an important research challenge for smart cities. Embracing generative AI technologies, redefining design and housing styles using virtual reality or metaverse technologies, and virtual environments where various stakeholders can collaborate are gaining attention. There is also a need to develop optimized digital twin technologies to maximize the use of resources in the context of a circular economy. In this context, multidisciplinary research to embrace the uncertainty and atypicality of cities and restore the serendipity of the environment is the inevitable future of architectural research.

The main aim of this Special Issue is to explore the recent challenges and developments of multi-disciplinary approaches in smart city and buildings information technologies. Topics include but are not limited to:

  • built environment model

  • urban prototyping
  • design for reuse
  • digital twin
  • uncertainty
  • serendipity

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Buildings is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
