Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

According to the WHO, periodontitis in its severe form affects about one tenth of adults worldwide and can be found in sixth place in the list of the most prevalent human diseases. The periodontium is a complex system composed of different tissues supporting and surrounding the tooth: the gingiva, periodontal ligament (PDL), cementum, and alveolar bone. In healthy subjects, the PDL covers the tooth root almost entirely and the tight epithelial seal prevents microorganisms from reaching the PDL, while in patients, the tissular integrity of the periodontium is severely compromised. Any regeneration approach involving such a hierarchically compartmentalized architecture will face significant challenges, and these have so far hindered the clinical translation of promising basic science discoveries. Further research endeavors are needed in order to finally attain bio-mimicking materials, effective cell-laden scaffolds, and 3D bioprinting techniques to eventually enable advanced clinical treatments that can replace the bone grafts and membranes traditionally used in guided tissue regeneration. New dental techniques hold promise in bridging the gap between research and clinical applications.

As the Guest Editor of this Special Issue of Biomedicines, I would like to invite colleagues who have experience in both the dental and biological fields and who are experts in dental tissue engineering to participate. This Special Issue will serve as a report on the state of the art in basic, translational, and clinical research in the tissue engineering field, to provide fellow dentists and researchers from various specialisms with information on regenerative techniques.

This Special Issue will cover, but will not be limited to, the following topics:

  • 3D bioprinting;
  • Bases of periodontal physiology;
  • Regeneration aspects of periodontal therapy;
  • Regeneration aspects of implantology;
  • 3D models of the periodontium;
  • Mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs), preferably of dental origin;
  • Cell senescence in MSCs;
  • Cell aging in MSCs;
  • Therapeutic approaches to attenuating the senescence/aging phenotypes of MSCs;
  • The state of the art of clinical applications of stem cells in bone and periodontal regeneration.

It is my pleasure to invite you to submit a manuscript for consideration for this Special Issue. Full papers, communications, and reviews are welcome.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Biomedicines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
