Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue explores how sensory experiences shape students’ educational journey. One key challenge in current research is to integrate the perspectives of diverse stakeholders and to understand sensory experience at physiological, cognitive, emotional, social and behavioral levels. Adopting a holistic perspective, this Special Issue considers students’ embodied perceptions, mental health, social interactions, involvement in learning spaces and engagement in learning processes. Submissions may relate to any type of educational context. We are open to a diversity of educational levels (preschool, primary, secondary, higher education, personal education) as well as a diversity of settings (mainstream, specialist, alternative provision). Possible topics include (and are not limited to): research on sensory modalities (sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch, interoception, proprioception), play, physical activity, artistic activities, and music education. We are open to a diversity of methods, including research reviews, single-subject studies, case studies, longitudinal research, intervention studies, (quasi-)experimental methods, quantitative and qualitative analyses, as well as neuroscientific and creative approaches. Submissions may encompass diverse voices and perspectives, including: children and young people with/without special needs; teachers; educational psychologists; parents; leaders; community groups. The Special Issue adopts an interdisciplinary lens to collate work with clear implications for educational practice, policy, and inclusive learning design.
