Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The intensifying effects of climate change pose significant challenges to the built environment, including the increased energy demands, the vulnerability to extreme climate conditions, the reduction in thermal comfort and the accelerated degradation of structures. In this context, the renovation of existing buildings represents a crucial step for climate change mitigation and adaptation, promoting interventions that make buildings resilient in the long term. Accordingly, the research topic investigated in this Special Issue explores active and passive strategies to enhance energy efficiency, sustainability and adaptability in the context of climate change. The retrofits aim to reduce energy use and environmental impacts while strengthening durability against future challenges like rising temperatures, heat waves, extreme precipitation events, storms and fluctuating humidity.

The contributions to this Special Issue may adopt a thorough assessment of potential solutions that integrate current climate data with projections from reliable models. These methods would enable the quantification of key indicators, including energy savings, emissions reductions, economic trade-offs and thermal comfort conditions. In parallel, these approaches also allow for the assessment of impacts on building integrity, with particular attention to material behavior and durability under projected climate-related stresses.

In detail, some of the possible topics to be covered in the Special Issue are:

  • climate-resilient retrofitting strategies for existing buildings;
  • active and passive energy-efficient solutions;
  • impact of climate projections on building;
  • hygrothermal simulations for retrofit evaluation;
  • energy consumption and emissions reductions;
  • economic lifecycle analysis of retrofits;
  • material durability under extreme weather;
  • passive solar design;
  • enhanced thermal insulation;
  • green roofs and vegetative systems;
  • adaptive HVAC and smart climate controls;
  • sustainability in urban development;
  • policy guidelines for resilient building upgrades.

Therefore, this Special Issue of the Atmosphere journal aims to collect scientific contributions (articles/communications/reviews) on “Climate Change Adaptation Strategies for Resilient Buildings” through studies carried out with different approaches and case study applications.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
