Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The Special Issue “Low-Cost Atmospheric Sensor Networks for Wildfire Risk Assessment and Early Detection” aims to showcase recent advances in the development, validation and application of affordable sensor technologies for environmental monitoring. The Issue focuses on the growing role of low-cost sensor networks in providing high-resolution spatial and temporal observations of atmospheric pollutants, meteorological variables and wildfire-related emissions, complementing conventional monitoring infrastructures.

Contributions are encouraged on topics including sensor design and characterization, wireless sensor networks, Internet of Things (IoT) architectures, calibration methodologies, data fusion, machine learning approaches and real-time data processing. Particular attention is given to the deployment of dense monitoring networks for air quality assessment, early wildfire detection, smoke plume tracking and the characterization of pollutant dispersion.

The Special Issue also welcomes studies addressing operational challenges such as sensor reliability, long-term performance, uncertainty quantification and integration with remote sensing and modelling systems. By bringing together interdisciplinary research from atmospheric science, environmental engineering, data science and sensor technology, this collection aims to advance cost-effective solutions for environmental surveillance, risk management and climate resilience.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Atmosphere is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
