Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has taken significant steps in recent years towards transcending its traditional data analysis role and emerging as a core component for multifaceted system characterization and management. These systems, from connected infrastructure and industrial sectors to ecosystems of the planet, as well as social networks, tend to display complex interactions, uncertainty, and behaviours that are emergent but not easily predicted. While still useful, classical modelling approaches have an increasingly difficult time representing this magnitude of complexity. This is where AI is being demonstrated as a useful tool.

This Special Issue aims to provide the latest contributions that link AI and complex systems—specifically, in terms of how AI may assist in modelling, interpreting, and controlling our modern-day complex systems. We are especially excited to view work that not only applies existing methods but also reflects critically on these limitations or merges different approaches in interesting and meaningful ways. Theoretical contributions and applied works are all equally welcome, particularly when they point towards the interdisciplinary dialogue.

Submissions on a wide variety of topics are welcomed, including (but not limited to) the following:

  • Advanced machine learning and deep learning methods for complex systems;
  • AI-based optimization and control strategies;
  • Multi-agent systems and decentralized intelligence;
  • Network and interconnected environment modelling with data;
  • Hybridization between AI- and Physics-based models or problem-specific models;
  • Methods to make it more robust, resilient, and better able to deal with risks;
  • Applications based on data driven from energy and healthcare to urban systems, the environment, and industry;
  • Ethical and social issues regarding AI in interactions with complex sociotechnical systems.

We are particularly interested in multi-disciplinary essays, thereby illustrating how insights from across different fields can be combined to solve common problems. We encourage case studies, experimental investigations, and critical reviews that provide new perspectives on where AI fits in complexity.

All submissions will be peer-reviewed according to the protocols of Applied Sciences.

The aim of this Special Issue is to encourage diverse discussions and inspire new research focusing on the intersection between AI methods and complex systems.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.
