Special Issue Information
The Special Issue mainly focuses on theories, methods and applications of environmental information systems, intelligent devices, cloud computing, blockchain, spatial information technology, data mining and artificial intelligence (AI).
Widely dispersed devices can generate more data, supply processing power, and function cooperatively to execute various tasks locally and assign their execution to more capable nodes.
In such a complicated environment, conventional communication technologies are inadequate for connecting a large number of low-power IoT devices, including sensors, actuators, robots, and smartphones.
Middleware architecture, as well as cloud and edge computing case studies, will be essential in addressing device heterogeneity and the massive amount of data produced by IoT sources.
Proper management platforms need to be developed to dynamically detect, integrate, and coordinate the introduced environmental IoT devices.
New lightweight protocols that support and ensure secure services, like data integrity and authentication, must be designed and developed.
In addition to IP-based solutions, innovative future Internet networking examples are expected to be essential to the deployment of IoT smart environments.
Advances in Smart Environments & Internet of Things is dedicated to critical areas of environmental information technology. The focus is on publishing and disseminating the latest research findings, creating a high-level academic exchange platform, and fostering advancements in the field of smart environmental engineering.
The publication seeks original research articles, review papers, and case studies that showcase innovative environmental applications in the following areas:
- Intelligent equipment and systems.
- Intelligent management and control.
- Data-driven decision-making.
- AI-powered environmental monitoring and prediction.
- Edge AI and distributed intelligence for smart environments.
- Sustainable and resilient smart ecosystems.
- Blockchain and trusted environmental data infrastructures.
- Intelligent sensor networks and advanced sensing technologies.
- Environmental data quality, FAIR data, and interoperability.
- Human-centered AI for environmental decision making.
Researchers working in artificial intelligence, computer networks, computer vision, environmental data science, smart farming applications, precision agriculture, and other related fields are invited to contribute to this exciting Special Issue in Applied Science (MDPI).

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
