Dear Colleagues,
Although piezoelectric devices are a well-known and consolidated technology, they have recently found a considerable interest in energy harvesters manufacturing.
A piezoelectric energy harvester is a system able to guarantee a simple and instantaneous approach to convert structural and environmental vibrations into a voltage output without the need to use complex geometries and many additional electrical components.
Hence, these harvesters are commonly employed to supply integrated, remote and non-grid connected electrical devices. In the future, they could also become an innovative solution for renovating wireless, wearable and portable electronic devices into self-powered systems.
However, conventional piezoelectric solid crystals can produce only low electrical power. Their limits are focused on their low power density, low conversion efficiency, high internal impedance and AC output. These disadvantages can be overcome by using recent technologies such as flexible piezoceramic patches, by working under specific operating conditions such as mechanical resonance, and finally by adopting strategies to match the internal impedance of the harvester to that of the external load.
The aim of this Special Issue is to collect new methods and applications interested in improving and developing piezoelectric energy harvesters.
