Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Manufacturing is a critical backbone of modern society. Through the processes of industrial manufacturing, raw materials are transformed into finished products. These processes involve not only fundamental chemical, physical, electrical, and mechanical steps, but also the systematic and integrated design, operation, and control of manufacturing systems, encompassing key areas such as production planning, logistics, quality management, automation, human–robot collaboration, optimization, and innovation, among others.
As society evolves, so do manufacturing techniques. The core principles of human-centricity, sustainability, and resilience, is reshaping production paradigms. However, with a growing population and increasing material consumption, it is imperative to improve the efficiency, precision, and flexibility of industrial and manufacturing processes while ensuring their environmental and economic sustainability.
With this Special Issue, we aim to promote discussion among researchers and engineers and share the most recent advancements in this field. We encourage the submission of studies that cover aspects related to industrial and manufacturing processes, including, but not limited to, the following topics:
- Smart manufacturing, design, analysis, control, and optimization of processes;
- Special technologies in manufacturing: Additive Manufacturing, Laser, Plasma, Ultrasonic, Ion, and Electron Beam, Water Jet, Chemical and Electrochemical Machining, etc.;
- High-precision manufacturing techniques (e.g., surface milling, etching, electroforming, die casting) and their adaptation toward sustainability;
- Techniques for improved manufacturing efficiency and throughput, ranging from foundational methodologies like Lean Manufacturing and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) to advanced technical approaches such as in-process monitoring, adaptive control, high-speed automation, hybrid manufacturing, and Digital Twin-driven optimization;
- Industry 4.0 and its main technologies: the Internet of Things (IoT), Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), Big Data, Simulation, Emulation, Digital Twins, Virtual Commissioning, Advanced Robotics (Cobotics, Humanoid Robotics, Mobile Robotics, etc.), Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, etc.;
- Trends in supply chain management and logistics technologies;
- Advanced materials for industry, manufacturing, and products, such as high-strength materials, lightweight materials, and carbon fiber;
- New or hybrid forms of manufacturing and manufacturing systems;
- Implementation of new materials and technologies for advancing sustainability in manufacturing (e.g., green composites, biodegradable materials, energy-efficient process technologies, and circular economy models).

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
