Special Issue Information

Dear Colleague,

This Special Issue is focused on the origins of pollutants and their effects on human health and ecological systems, aiming to provide an understanding of pollutant ecotoxicology for scientists, policymakers, and individuals concerned about the adverse effects of pollution and the measures necessary to mitigate this impact. We are pleased to invite you to submit your valuable contributions to our journal. The scope of this journal encompasses a broad range of topics, focusing primarily on the sources of toxic pollutants, toxic effects on organisms, and impacts on human health, including identifying the sources and distribution of toxic pollutants, chemical speciation and transformations, and their persistence and mechanisms in the environment; the construction of cell or animal models to study the molecular mechanisms of pollutant toxicology and risk assessment, big data methods such as machine learning to build models for identifying and evaluating toxicity and risk, and mechanisms that pollutants exert toxicity in the environment; the impact and mechanisms of pollutants on growth and metabolism. We also invite authors to address pollutant treatment and removal. In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Oxidative stress is an imbalance between reactive oxygen species production and antioxidant defense that can lead to reproductive disorders and poor pregnancy outcomes. Environmental pollution under climate change is involved in reactive oxygen species formation and may cause various dysfunctions of the reproductive system. Oxidative stress is a widespread factor that affects the physiology of the male and female reproductive systems, leading to high levels of DNA damage and infertility. Miscarriage, preeclampsia, and premature birth are all linked to oxidative stress. Environmental pollution induces excesses of oxidative stress by expanding ROS generation or overwhelming the physiological responses of the antioxidant defense system. This increases cellular damage, inflammation, and the development of numerous diseases. Here, we present a brief outline of the physiological and developmental roles that oxidative stress plays during pregnancy. We also offer some insights into the underlying mechanisms that have been put forth, which culminate in a summary of the harmful effects of oxidative stress that have an environmental origin in pregnancy-related complications. The current work may motivate the design of more focused wellbeing measures in order to prevent and promote human health and anticipate unfavorable pregnancy outcomes. Full article
