Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The quest for enhanced mechanical efficiency and component longevity has positioned nanomaterials at the forefront of modern tribology. As industrial applications push the boundaries of pressure, speed, and temperature, traditional lubricants have begun to reach their functional limits. This Special Issue, "Recent Progress in Enhancing the Tribological Properties and Lubrication Performance of Nanomaterials," aims to highlight the transformative role of nanotechnology in overcoming these challenges.
We seek to explore the synergistic effects of various nanostructures—including nanoparticles, 2D materials (like graphene and MoS2), carbon nanotubes, and nanocomposites—as both lubricant additives and self-lubricating coatings. The scope of this Special Issue encompasses the following:
- Mechanistic Insights: Novel theories regarding mending, polishing, and protective film formation at the nano-scale.
- Material Innovation: Synthesis and characterization of "smart" nanolubricants that respond to environmental stimuli.
- Extreme Conditions: Performance evaluations under high-vacuum, cryogenic, or high-temperature conditions.
- Sustainability: Green synthesis of nanomaterials and their capacity to reduce global energy consumption.
By bridging the gap between fundamental molecular dynamics and practical industrial engineering, this collection will serve as a definitive roadmap for the next generation of friction-reduction and wear-protection technologies. We invite researchers to contribute original papers and reviews that push the boundaries of what is possible at the interface of these fields.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
