Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue aims to showcase groundbreaking research and transformative innovations in building design and construction that are shaping the sustainable cities of tomorrow. It underscores the critical interdisciplinary approaches required to address pressing global challenges such as climate change, rapid urbanization, and the integration of cutting-edge technologies within the built environment. By fostering collaboration between the fields of architecture, engineering, computer science, environmental science, and urban planning, this issue seeks to accelerate holistic, impactful solutions that enhance environmental resilience, social well-being, and economic viability.

We welcome contributions that include, but are not limited to, the following thematic areas:

A.    Digital and Automated Construction.

  • Advances in Building Information Modeling (BIM), including 5D and 6D BIM integrating cost, schedule, and energy considerations.
  • Integration of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) to enhance BIM efficacy.
  • Robotics and automation innovations that elevate construction productivity, precision, and safety.
  • Experimental approaches leveraging AI-based algorithmic architecture, immersive VR environments, and additive manufacturing (3D printing) components.

B.   Sustainability and Materials.

  • Development and implementation of green building technologies.
  • Concepts and practices for carbon-neutral and carbon-positive design.
  • Utilization of recycled, bio-based, and circular economy materials for sustainable construction.

C.    Resilience and Smart Infrastructure.

  • Climate-adaptive and resilient architectural strategies addressing flood resistance, storm resilience, and thermal regulation.
  • Smart building technologies enabled by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT).
  • AI and IoT applications for automated environmental control, predictive maintenance, and operational optimization.

D.   Urban Planning and Modular Methods.

  • Modular and prefabrication construction methodologies promoting waste reduction, labor efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Designing human-centric, adaptive spaces to foster mental health, community engagement, and well-being.
  • Emerging urbanism paradigms including smart cities, 15-minute cities, tactical urban-ism, and public space revitalization.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
