Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Let Food Be Your Medicine, and Medicine Be Your Food. Nutrition focuses on the physiological effects and corresponding effects of nutrients on human health, as well as on the occurrence, development, and recovery of diseases, while pharmacology focuses on the treatment of diseases by active ingredients. As the modern medical model gradually changes from a simple medical service model to a comprehensive model integrating health care, prevention and medical treatment, nutrition and pharmacology are gradually melting into each other. How bioactive ingredients, especially those derived from functional foods or natural medicines, play a role in preventing or treating diseases is the intersection of nutrition and pharmacology. In order to promote the development and integration of nutrition and pharmacology and present the latest research results in this field, Applied Sciences plans to issue a special issue of "New Insights into Bioactive Compounds: At the Crossroads between Nutrition and Pharmacology", and researchers are welcome to contribute. We are currently inviting papers for the following themed article collections (including but not limited to):

  1. New methods and technologies for the research on nutritional activity of bioactive compounds;
  2. Efficacy research on bioactive compounds;
  3. Safety research on bioactive compounds;
  4. Research on bioactive compounds isolation, extraction and identification; 5 Functional food development research based on bioactive compounds.

Cell-culture-based drug tests are usually performed in an instantaneous delivery manner. However, in vivo pharmacokinetic studies have shown a steady increase in the concentration of bioactive compounds in the plasma following oral administration, with the maximum concentration observed after several hours. Here, a novel palm-sized syringe pump powered by the manual winding of a spring was utilized for sustained delivery of chlorogenic acid (CHA) to lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-challenged RAW 264.7 macrophages over 2 h. When delivered in a sustained manner and simulating the in vivo pharmacokinetics following oral administration, CHA showed a stronger inhibitory effect on LPS-induced expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase and the transcription and secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-α. It also enhanced the mRNA expression of the gene encoding heme oxygenase 1. The suppression of phosphorylation of p38 but not the nuclear translocation of nuclear factor-κB was affected by the sustained delivery of CHA. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis indicated that the sustained delivery model showed a higher concentration of CHA in the conditioned medium two hours after starting the delivery. A stronger anti-inflammatory effect of CHA was observed upon sustained delivery to the cell medium, simulating an in vivo pharmacokinetic release profile following oral administration. Full article

The present study discusses foods for professional athletes since sports nutrition is the foundation of effective performance. A dietary supplement complex designed for ski orienteers, swimmers, road cyclists, and biathletes is described. The composition of the dietary supplement complex with directed influence on metabolic processes, intensity, and training load is given. All the ingredients for this complex are selected, taking into account their synergistic effect and safety. The manufacturing process, with its gentle process conditions like granulation at 40 °C, drying at 60 °C, and a relatively short manufacturing time, ensures the safety of biologically active ingredients and their functional properties. The manufacturing company is the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certified and meets the General Manufacturing Practice (GMP) requirements. The clinical trials were undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of the dietary supplement complex. The findings indicate increased adaptation to training, enhanced recovery, and balanced emotional state. The benefits of adding the dietary supplement complex to eating plans of sportsmen are listed.
