Light Transport and Its Practical Applications in Biomedical Optical Diagnostics, Sensing and Computer Graphics

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue is devoted to the practical application of light transport methods in the fields of biomedical optical diagnostics, sensing and computer graphics. Accurate modeling of optical radiation propagation and its interaction with complex materials such as biological tissues is key to a number of practical applications, from 3D photorealistic computer graphics rendering to sensing and biomedical visualization. This Special Issue is dedicated to the development of novel algorithms capable of dealing with multilayered translucent media, such as human skin, their practical implementations and subsequent experimental backing. We invite submissions considering the theoretical background required to solve radiative transport and raytracing equations (forward and inverse), further development of Monte Carlo-based approaches, their acceleration using GPU/cloud programming and experimental imaging techniques enhanced by artificial intelligence/machine learning methods. Papers are welcome that detail immersive visuals such as 3D renderings, biomedical visualizations and novel approaches for data presentation. Furthermore, papers presenting methodologies for screening functional conditions of biological tissues with high sensitivity and specificity, and specifically those focused on the use of the fundamental properties of light, such as its spectral and coherence properties, spin/optical angular momentum and quantum entanglements, are also encouraged. We are particularly interested in the comprehensive examination of light’s interaction with the tissue and the reconstruction of its optical properties, such as birefringence, chirality, absorption and anisotropy of scattering. With this in mind, we hope this Special Issue, with the participation of leading scientists, will guide readers and new users towards a better understanding of complex and unique light-scattering phenomena.
