Antibiotics Webinar | Methods for Preventing Biofilm Formation and Treating Infections Caused by Biofilm Formed on Biotics or Abiotic Surfaces, 8 October 2024
Synthetic devices used in healthcare, whether to restore functions or for use in treatments, are prone to biofilm formation, favoring the development of local and systemic inflammation and/or infection. A biofilm is composed of a complex structure of mucins, proteins, polymucosaccharides, bacterials, and yeast. To control an infection, mechanical methods (brushing, microwaves, and ultrasound), chemical methods (alkaline peroxides, sodium hypochlorite, and chlorhexidine), or drugs can be used. Furthermore, alternative methods for controlling biofilm can be found in the literature, such as altering the surface of the materials or the use of new strategies from bacteriophages to control multidrug-resistant bacteria. However, such studies are not yet conclusive on the best ways to prevent biofilm formation and treat occasional biofilm infections. This webinar, therefore, seeks to address some of the strategies for preventing biofilm formation and treating the infections caused by biofilm formed on biotics or abiotic surfaces.
