Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Unlike mammals, which primarily synthesize and store fat in adipose tissue, the liver of birds is the main organ for de novo synthesis of fatty acids. After synthesis, fatty acids are transported to various tissues throughout the body in the form of lipoproteins for storage or utilization. Avian fatty liver syndrome, especially fatty liver hemorrhage syndrome in laying hens, is an important nutritional metabolic disease in modern intensive poultry farming. It is characterized by excessive lipid deposition in the liver and liver dysfunction, which in severe cases leads to liver rupture and hemorrhage, increased mortality, and significant economic losses. This article aims to explore the regulatory network of lipid metabolism in birds and its key role in the development and progression of fatty liver and to review current research progress and potential nutritional, management, and genetic intervention strategies.
