Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to invite you to contribute a manuscript to a forthcoming Special Issue entitled “Current Research on Shrimp Viruses: Pathogenesis, Detection, and Control in a Changing Aquaculture Landscape.”

Shrimp aquaculture faces substantial and recurrent economic losses due to viral diseases, with pathogens such as white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), infectious myonecrosis virus (IMNV), decapod iridescent virus 1 (DIV1), Taura syndrome virus (TSV), yellow head virus (YHV), and emerging iridoviruses and picornaviruses posing ongoing threats to global production. Recent work has highlighted the rapid emergence of new viruses and genotypes, the complex genomic evolution of WSSV, and the continuous appearance of novel agents such as shrimp hemocyte iridescent virus and new picornaviruses. At the same time, innovative approaches in diagnostics (multiplex PCR, CRISPR-based point-of-care tests), therapeutics and prevention (RNA interference, immune priming, exploitation of host antiviral pathways), and host–pathogen interaction studies (computational protein–protein interaction, tissue tropism, and virome analyses) are reshaping possibilities for disease management in aquaculture.

This Special Issue aims to assemble cutting-edge research and comprehensive reviews that advance understanding and control of shrimp viruses. We welcome submissions based on, but not limited to, the following topics:

- Emergence, evolution, and epidemiology of established and novel shrimp viruses (e.g., WSSV, IMNV, DIV1, SHIV, picornaviruses)

- Molecular virology, genomic variability, and host–virus co-evolution

- Diagnostics and surveillance: PCR-based methods, multiplex and field-ready assays, CRISPR and isothermal platforms

- Host innate immunity, antiviral signaling pathways, RNAi, miRNAs, and antiviral effectors

- Host–pathogen, protein–protein interactions and computational/omics approaches

- Tissue tropism, pathogenesis, and histopathology of viral infections

- RNAi-based and other novel antiviral strategies, including immune priming, endogenous viral elements, and breeding for disease tolerance

- Virome studies and the role of environmental and cultural conditions in disease emergence

- Practical biosecurity, surveillance, and farm-level management strategies to prevent and mitigate outbreaks
