Second Edition of Tick-Borne Diseases in Animals

Dear Colleagues,

Ticks are blood-feeding arthropods that play a vital role in public and veterinary health as vectors of a wide range of viral, bacterial, and protozoan pathogens. Environmental and climatic changes in Northern Europe have shaped a geographical area in which new tick species may become established and introduce new tick-borne pathogens. Additionally, the travel and trade of animals contribute to the global spread of ticks. Such movements can introduce new tick species and new pathogens into previously free areas and communities.

Updated knowledge of tick distribution and tick-borne pathogens is fundamental for the creation of risk maps and will allow relevant advice to be provided to the general public, suggesting measures to prevent tick bites and, consequently, tick-borne diseases. As veterinary medicine advances, signs and symptoms of disease that may have been missed before are now being detected. Several tick-borne diseases are known to be endemic in many countries all over the world, but, to date, there is limited information about the prevalence of these infections in animals.

Original manuscripts that address any aspect of tick-borne diseases in animals are invited to this Special Issue. In particular, tick-borne diseases in companion animals, the potential burden of tick-borne infections on production animals, and trends in the distribution as well as prevalence of tick-borne infections are welcome.

Animals is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
