Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

While artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly transformed our lives with advancements in big data and processing capabilities achieved using computers powered by graphic processing units, it has also become the engine that, with its capability to digitally alter or generate content in media, inflicts deep fakes on society, often in the form of images, videos, or audio that can be used to create convincing forgeries or fake news that are difficult to distinguish from real content. However, one of the most positive narratives surrounding AI as a disruptive and transformative technology is its potential to be harnessed for social good. AI can be leveraged in ways that create substantial social impact, addressing many of the world’s most pressing challenges, such as enhanced healthcare delivery and disaster response. This Special Issue explores the positive uses of AI and the social impact it has generated by offering innovative ways to revolutionise industries, economies, and society. This Special Issue originates from the AI for Good Symposium organised by the Sir Peter Rigby Digital Futures Institute on 8th October 2025 at Aston University, Birmingham, and these papers will together offer a glimpse of the richness of potential human–machine interaction while providing state-of-the-art ways forward. We hope that this Special Issue will be a stepping stone to advancing research in this domain, and that it will help to enable collective intelligence for real social benefit.

We invite to this Special Issue original research contributions and review papers in the broad field of AI for good including, but not limited to, applications that benefit society and the following topics:

  • Adversarial AI to mitigate deepfakes;
  • Agentic AI to use AI-driven autonomous agents for decision-making;
  • Generative AI to generate models with improved logical reasoning;
  • Responsible AI to ensure fairness, accountability, transparency, and bias mitigation;
  • Conversational AI to analyse, recognise, and translate speech with assistive chatbots;
  • Generative XR to use AI for generating an immersive and engaging metaverse.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. AI is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
