Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The transition towards more sustainable and resilient agrifood systems is a global priority. Circular economy principles offer a promising framework to reduce waste, promote resource efficiency, and generate new value along the food chain. This is particularly relevant in contexts where traditional supply chains are under stress due to environmental, economic, or social challenges.

Aim and scope of the special issue:

This Special Issue aims to explore how circular approaches are being developed and implemented across agricultural, aquaculture, and food-related sectors. It will examine innovations, socio-economic dynamics, and governance frameworks that support the sustainable transformation of food systems.

Cutting-edge research:

We welcome interdisciplinary contributions that address the integration of circularity in food production and consumption, with special attention to underutilized resources. Among these, the potential valorization of non-indigenous (alien) species—often seen as a threat—can also represent an opportunity when managed within sustainable and traceable value chains. Research on stakeholder engagement, consumer perception, market feasibility, and local ecological knowledge is particularly encouraged.

What kind of papers we are soliciting:

We invite empirical studies, reviews, and policy-oriented papers on the following topics:

Circular economy models in agriculture, aquaculture, and food services;

Valorization of novel or marginal resources (e.g., by-products, alien species);

Consumer and stakeholder perceptions;

The role of data, local knowledge, and behavior in enabling circularity;

Institutional, economic, and policy drivers and barriers.
