Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The “AEROSPATIAL” Conferences held within the National Institute for Aerospace Research “Elie Carafoli”—INCAS Bucharest (under the aegis of The Romanian Academy) are unique in Romania being the best meeting space for local and foreign researchers in the field of aviation, digitalization, and space research and industry for presenting, disseminating, and promoting their scientific research and technological developments. The first “AEROSPATIAL” conference was held in 1998. Since then, the event has continuously grown, attracting researchers and specialists from all over the world, representing a significant academic space for presenting the latest findings in the aeronautics and aerospace field.

This Special Issue aims to publish papers by authors who presented their research at the 11th Edition of the “AEROSPATIAL” Conference (AEROSPATIAL 2024), held in Bucharest, Romania, 17–18 October 2024.

Papers that focus on the following areas of interest will be considered in this Special Issue:

Under the European Space Agency (ESA) support, INCAS has taken the initiative to develop an Ascent and Descent Autonomous Maneuverable Platform (ADAMP) which will serve as an in-flight testing platform for reusable space technologies. This paper is focusing on activities aimed at assessing the robustness of the control system of the ADAMP in the presence of aerodynamic disturbances, with an emphasis on stability and disturbance rejection. Considering the ADAMP’s inherent aerodynamic instability, the way aerodynamic forces and moments are incorporated in the control design formulation plays a critical role in the effectiveness of the adopted control solution in the presence of wind gusts and potential interaction with sloshing modes. To showcase these phenomena, two alternative control design methodologies are employed in the paper: the baseline strategy relies on robust self-scheduled structured H-Infinity optimization, while the second approach is based on nonlinear sliding mode theory. Different structured H-Infinity controllers are designed and analyzed in the frequency domain, providing a clear understanding of the impact of the aerodynamic effects in terms of stability margin degradation. These controllers are then thoroughly compared with the sliding mode alternative via nonlinear worst-case simulation of typical ascent and descent flights in the presence of strong wind gusts. Considering the advantages of using expanded polystyrene (EPS) reinforced with adhesive tape made of glass fibers, this paper presents a design and technological solution for a functional drone of class C1, meaning a maximum take-off mass of 900 g, and tests validating the use of EPS for small UAVs under flight conditions. The selected profile was MH-49, which had a maximum chord thickness of 10.5%. This profile demonstrated a much lower coefficient of pitching moment than that of the NACA 63215 profile, giving this flying-wing UAV superior governability. This airfoil implies a geometry with greater attenuation of the trailing edge, and the design favors the placement of stress concentrators towards the trailing edge. Due to the use of fiberglass tape reinforcement technology, it is possible to address this profile, implying improved aerodynamic performance. The use of EPS in the disposable UAV industry may bring significant benefits, contributing to the development of high-performance, versatile, and low-cost UAVs, suitable for a wide range of tactical and logistic applications. This study presents the design, the fabrication, and testing of this drone, highlighting the advantages and possible challenges of the proposed solution. Full article
