Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Organizations worldwide face tremendous difficulties in finding valid and renewed ways of being productive and economically viable when faced with an economic scenario of high inflation levels and the prospect of an economic recession. In this sense, managers are currently highly pressured to deliver efficient procedures regarding the different areas of the organization.

The way organizations deal with their workers is a topic in which several issues remain unaddressed by existing research. One of those areas relates to the role that internal communication may play regarding the way workers are managed in accordance with the organization's strategy and aims, especially if combined with human resource management policies. In effect, internal communication deserves additional relevance in regard to information management within organizations. It is important to address its role in stimulating several relevant organizational key issues, such as a worker's performance, a worker's bond with the organization or the worker's involvement with the organization (amongst others). However, existing knowledge regarding the impact of internal communication in employee–organization and employee–work relations seems to be far from a mature level of understanding.

The Special Issue we are proposing here is intended to create discussion on how internal communication can present renewed solutions for the current challenges shaping organizations in today's economic scenario. Thus, we are seeking submissions that focus on the impacts of internal communication with regard to employee–organization and employee–work relations, bringing clarity to our existing knowledge.

Relevant theoretical perspectives might include (but are not limited to):

  • Internal communication and leadership;
  • Internal communication and organizational culture;
  • Internal communication and work relations;
  • Internal communication and individual performance;
  • Changing working environments and internal communication;
  • Corporate social responsibility and internal communication;
  • Innovation in organizations and internal communication;
  • Organizational change and internal communication;
  • Social networks and internal communication;
  • Employee–organization relationsand internal communication;
  • Employer brand and internal communication;
  • Internal communication and human resources management.

The tourism industry has been distinguishing itself by promoting economic benefits and contributing to the creation of employment and opportunities in the country. This paper aims to investigate and analyze the impact of symmetric internal communication on individual performance and organizational identification, as well as to evaluate the mediating role of organizational identification in this relationship. Through the cooperation of several institutions in the tourism business sector, online surveys were applied resulting in a convenience sample of a total of 237 hotel employees in Portugal. The results of this study demonstrate that symmetrical internal communication has a positive impact on organizational identification and individual performance, and that organizational identification exerts a partial mediating effect on the relationship between symmetrical internal communication and individual performance. This study therefore extends the knowledge of the effects of important variables usually treated separately by the literature, and thus we build bridges between the communication literature and human resource management, providing information to support the structuring of new strategies. The increasingly intense competition in organisations means that they have to develop strategies to differentiate themselves. One of these strategies consists of using internal communication to improve the company’s attractiveness to outside talent and increase its attractiveness to its existing employees. However, this relationship still needs to be studied in the existing literature. This review aims to find and understand the main recommendations to be used in internal communication to improve employer branding. Nine open access scientific articles published between 2013 and 2023 on Scopus and Web of Science, written in English, met the inclusion criteria. Internal communication has been proven to play a crucial role in employer branding. The review presents a series of guidelines that can be incorporated into internal communication to strengthen the employer brand. These relate to communication qualities, knowing how to listen to and respect employees, maintaining responsiveness, providing feedback and the flow of company-related information, and choosing the appropriate communication channels. This study contributes to the ongoing scientific community by summarising and exploring the literature from the past decade. Its findings enhance our understanding of this field of study and strongly advocate for future research. Full article
