Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Flow control methods play a crucial role in improving the performance, efficiency, and reliability of aerodynamic and energy-related systems. In industrial applications such as turbomachinery, wind and hydro-energy devices, and thermal power systems, flow control strategies are increasingly employed to mitigate flow separation, reduce losses, control unsteady phenomena, and enhance overall system robustness.

This Special Issue focuses on the analysis, design, and optimization of flow control methods with a strong emphasis on industrially relevant applications. It welcomes contributions based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), experimental investigations, or a combination of both. Contributions addressing passive and active flow control strategies are welcome, provided that realistic configurations, operating conditions, and performance trade-offs are considered. In particular, we focus on approaches capable of capturing complex flow phenomena associated with controlled flows, including turbulence, unsteadiness, and flow–structure interactions.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, CFD, experimental, or hybrid studies of flow control in turbomachinery, energy conversion systems, aerodynamic components, and thermal devices; modeling of flow control devices and strategies; performance enhancement and loss reduction through flow control; control of separation, stall, transition, wakes, and secondary flows; and optimization and design methodologies. Studies combining high-fidelity simulations with reduced-order models or data-driven approaches for flow control applications are also encouraged.

This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of current advances in flow control methods, highlighting their practical relevance and potential impact on modern energy and aerodynamic systems.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Actuators is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
