Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

According to the fifth Principle of Green Chemistry, alternative solvents with better environmental performance need to be developed as a priority. This has motivated many researchers in recent decades to look for greener, environmentally benign media to facilitate a wide range of chemical engineering processes. The number of publications focused on the application of Chemical Engineering methods for processes with various supercritical fluids, mainly carbon dioxide but also including other compounds as a modifying component or alternative to CO2, is enormous.

Applications of supercritical fluids include extraction, cleaning processes, impregnation and aerogels production, particle formation, sterilization, chemical reactions, energy, and waste treatment, among others. In all circumstances, the applications of supercritical fluids allow significantly eliminating or decreasing solvent residues, contributing to environmentally friendly chemical ways and technical innovations to realize green chemical processes.

Still, in recent years, it has been recognized that for the realization of the Circular Economy principle powered by the “Cradle to Cradle” perspective, which seeks to create techniques that are not just efficient but are essentially waste free, supercritical fluid processes for themselves may not be sufficient and lead to the desired results. Hence, development of novel technologies based on implementing mild, advanced supercritical fluid processing with conventional processes is necessary.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. ChemEngineering is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
