Prof. Dr. Alan P. Sawchuk Appointed Section Editor-in-Chief of Section “Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease” in the Journal of Cardiovascular Development and Disease

We are pleased to announce that Prof. Dr. Alan P. Sawchuk has been appointed Section Editor-in-Chief of the Section “Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease” in the Journal of Cardiovascular Development and Disease (JCDD, ISSN: 2308-3425).

Prof. Dr. Alan P. Sawchuk is a professor at the Department of Surgery, Division of Vascular Surgery, Indiana University School of Medicine, USA. Prof. Dr. Sawchuk has an active academic practice teaching students and residents and taking care of patients with complex vascular diseases. He actively researches machine learning and artificial intelligence, blood flow hemodynamics, and ultrasound as they relate to cerebrovascular, aortoiliac, and renovascular disease. He also has a dynamic hemodynamics laboratory together with the Department of Engineering.

The following is a short Q&A with Prof. Dr. Alan P. Sawchuk, who shared his vision for the Section with us as well as his views on the research area and open access publishing:

1. What appealed to you about the journal that made you want to take on the role of its Section Editor-in-Chief?
The Journal of Cardiovascular Development and Disease covers a broad range of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and has a good impact factor and an international flavor.

2. What is your vision for the journal?
I look forward to further expanding the journal's coverage of both stroke and cerebrovascular disease as well as enhancing its coverage of peripheral vascular disease. I hope to further improve the journal’s impact factor and expand its base of reviewers in the United States.

3. What does the future of this field of research look like?
The research endeavors in stroke and cerebrovascular disease, which is a promising area for improvement. Brain salvage with endovascular interventions and stroke prevention are important areas that need further research. One of my particular interests is using new techniques in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and neural networks to improve decision making in cerebrovascular care.

4. What do you think of the development of open access in the publishing field?
I am enthusiastic about open access publishing because it will bring research to the attention of a wider array of researchers at an earlier stage. Hopefully, it will result in a more rapid dissemination of knowledge with more expeditious improvement in patient care.
