Join the Conversation at the 18th EASE Conference in Norway: "Editing in the Age of Misinformation" (14–16 May 2025)

MDPI is thrilled to announce that Dr. Marta Colomer (Public Affairs Specialist at MDPI) will serve as Chair of Session 9 at the 18th European Association of Science Editors (EASE) Conference, taking place in Oslo, Norway, from 14–16 May 2025. This year’s conference, themed "Editing in the Age of Misinformation", will bring together thought leaders and industry experts from around the world to discuss the crucial role of scientific editing and how misinformation continues to pose significant threats to the integrity of scientific research, publication, and communication.

Dr. Colomer will chair the panel discussion titled Trustworthy and Quality Journals: A Multi-Stakeholder Perspective,” highlighting strategies for assessing journal credibility, avoiding exploitative practices, and safeguarding the scientific publishing process. Join the discussion on Friday, 16 May 2025, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. (CEST).

The session will feature an outstanding lineup of diverse speakers:

  • Iryna Izarova (Professor of Law, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Ukraine) will discuss the threats posed to academic publishing by journals operating under dubious circumstances in temporarily occupied territories, using Ukraine as an example. She will highlight how such journals appropriate legitimate academic titles, misuse ISSNs, and disseminate biased information, presenting a global challenge that requires international dialogue and legal remedies.
  • Joanna Ball (Managing Director, DOAJ, Denmark) will explore the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and its role in supporting quality and trust in scholarly publishing. She will discuss how DOAJ’s criteria and initiatives contribute to building trust in quality open access journals and how libraries use DOAJ to advise on publishing venues and implement open access policies.
  • Sofie Wennström (Analyst, Stockholm University Library, Sweden) will introduce Think.Check.Submit, a tool designed to help researchers navigate the complex publishing landscape and make informed decisions about trustworthy publishers. She will focus on using the tool as both an educational resource and a quality benchmark for academic journals.
  • Shaharima Parvin (Senior Assistant Librarian, East West University, Bangladesh) will share a librarian’s perspective on building trust in scholarly communication, particularly within the digital landscape. She will discuss the role of library professionals in promoting transparency, ethics, and accessibility, and how strategies from Bangladesh’s academic libraries are combating misinformation, questionable journals, and fostering open science initiatives.

Commenting ahead of the event, Dr. Marta Colomer said: “Norway has long been at the forefront of innovation in scientific publishing. The country’s strong commitment to transparent and accessible research aligns seamlessly with the EASE Conference’s mission to advance the quality and credibility of scientific publishing. We look forward to an insightful session and are excited to see how this year’s EASE Conference will help shape the future of editing and scholarly publishing in an era of misinformation.”
