Cover Story: The study of cellular immunity is crucial for the protection against SARS-CoV-2. However, testing cellular immunity is complex and requires specialized techniques. We performed a nested case–control study with a sample of 225 subjects from the Borriana COVID-19 cohort to determine the cellular immune response (CIR) considering SARS-CoV-2 infection, reinfection and sequelae. We employed flow cytometry–based immunoassays for intracellular cytokine staining, using Wuhan and BA.2 antigens. We obtained positive responses of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, which were 89.8% and 85.3%, respectively. Patients who experienced sequelae exhibited a higher CIR than those who had not. T-cell response presented a positive correlation with anti-spike IgG antibody levels, and this was associated with several factors. View this paper
