Cover Story: Daily administered basal insulin analogs have been a cornerstone of multiple daily injection therapy for type 1 diabetes (T1D). Recently, once-weekly basal insulin analogs have been developed. Their extended action is based upon their binding to albumin and their gradual release into the bloodstream. Data for adult patients with T1D are limited, and none exist for pediatric or adolescent patients. Nevertheless, studies suggest that these analogs are safe and effective, benefiting those who miss doses or prefer fewer injections. They may reduce diabetic ketoacidosis risk and aid patients who struggle with diabetes devices. Further research is needed to address clinical questions about initiation, titration, and special situations like sick day management, especially in children and adolescents with T1D. View this paper
