Cover Story: The holy grail of burn wound healing is an ideal skin substitute replacing the need for harvesting a donor site to facilitate complete wound closure. The ideal properties would be a readily available tissue replacing the structure and function of skin. No skin substitutes currently fit the criteria completely, despite ongoing research for many decades. In the wound healing space, many products use the term ‘skin substitute’ with very little resemblance to the structure or function of skin. Here, we review the few true options available as skin substitutes for burn injury as a potential replacement for autografts. View this paper
