Artificial cells are bio-inspired man-made systems, similar to living cells, built to understand the basic principles of life and to generate new biotechnological products. The workshop “Molecular Communication Approaches for Wetware Artificial Life” (25 July 2023, Sapporo, Japan) was dedicated to the exploration of artificial cells that communicate with each other, or with biological cells, through chemical exchanges. As a result of these fundamental processes, artificial cells generate complex behaviors, paving the way for next-generation “wetware” artificial life systems with characteristics not present in conventional software/hardware systems. Quantitative investigations of molecular communications, using rigorous engineering models, will facilitate experimental progress in this field.
