Cover Story: This study investigates the influence of depression on adherence to annual diabetes care assessments in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Conducted on 13,285 patients within the Local Healthcare Authority of Romagna, this study followed patients over five years (2018–2022). The results showed that, while depression was initially linked to higher compliance with diabetes care guidelines, patients with pre-diabetes depression had a 5% lower adherence to the required assessments by the period 2021–2022 after adjusting for confounders. Older adults with depression exhibited particularly reduced adherence, while younger adults with post-diabetes depression demonstrated better compliance. These findings emphasize the need for integrating mental health care into diabetes management to improve long-term patient outcomes. View this paper
