Dwarf Interstocks Improve Aroma Quality of ‘Huahong’ Apple (Malus × domestica)
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
INTRODUCTION section
Lines 76-78: These sentences are not clear enough and need to be reformulated.
RESULTS section
Line 148: what is the meaning of „various CK combinations“(????).
Line 180: ...“in grown“....(????)
DISCUSSION section
Line 250-251: I think there is a better term than „apples of the Golden Delicious strain“, that is, it should be said „seedlings (or cultivars) derived from the cross of Golden Delicious and other cultivars“
Line 256: „Golden Delicious cultivars“ – this formulation is unclear (see above, line 250-251). It should be better explained.
Line 289: CG24 is a member of which group?
Lines 298-300: The difference between the highest and lowest total content in ‘Huahong’ apple skin among the different dwarf interstock combinations was 6598.25 μg·kg-1, which is 10.63 times that in the pulp (620.59 μg·kg-1) (Figure 1).
CONCLUSIONS section
Line 319: „the green pulp had a subtle flavor“ – it should be reformulated.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
In my opinion, this paper is interesting and acceptable to be published.

The development of optimal cultivation technologies that reveal the full potential of cultivars inherent in the genotype and provide for the requirements of industrial horticulture is an urgent area of scientific research. In this aspect, the manuscript ID: agriculture-1946370 is aimed at studying new rootstocks that maximize the genetic potential of pome crops and is a promising task in apple breeding.
There are questions and comments to the manuscript:
- Line 69-76: the provided information is not quite typical for the representatives of pome crops
- Specify the genetic origin the ‘Huahong’ apple cultivar
- How statistically reliable are the results obtained for volatile organic compounds (VOCs)?
- How does the VOCs content change (quantitatively and qualitatively) over the years of research, taking into account weather and climatic factors? This information should be added to the "Discussion" section
- The "Conclusions" section needs editing. Delete the authors' assumption (line 326-329); formulate your conclusions according to the aims of the experiment.
