Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The manuscript “applsci-1595598-peer-review-v1” dealing with the use of lassers has been refereed. Please comments are listed below. The paper needs major revision. I encourage the author to read and address my comments:

  1. The explanations on figure 3 and 4 needs some improvement. Please provide more explanations for these two figures.
  2. Add some results to the abstract and make it more meaningful for the readers.
  3. What is the future work for this valuable paper?
  4. Section 3.2.3: “Increased carrier injection efficiency through SCH tunnelling” provide more goveneing phenomena and through detail.
  5. Compare the transistor laser with the lasers using in additive manufacturing from the following literature.

  • Additive manufacturing a powerful tool for the aerospace industry.
  • Development and experimental study of an automated laser-foil-printing additive manufacturing system
  • Evolution of temperature and residual stress behavior in selective laser melting of 316L stainless steel across a cooling channel
  • Fatigue life optimization for 17-4Ph steel produced by selective laser melting
  • Proposal of design rules for improving the accuracy of selective laser melting (SLM) manufacturing using benchmarks parts

Reviewer 2 Report

This review paper describes the superiority of TL to DML. Many techniques to improve the performance of TL are given. (lines 138-639).

You write that the transmission rate of  DML is limited to below 50 Gbs (lines 33-34) , but you write nothing about the limit of the TL  transmission rate (lines 36-38). Please comment the limit of the transmission rate of TL as well.

Furthermore please add a table or a figures which describes  comparisons experimentally obtained transmission rates between DML and TL as a function of the published year. This is helpful to understand the trend of the TL developments by the methods discussed in the chapter 3 (lines 138-639).
