Comments and Suggestions for Authors

Presents high quality and shows valuable results. I´d like to start by congratulating the authors of this article on an issue that plagues many cities in many countries.

- Generally, the paper has some originality

- The scope of the research is interesting and valuable

-  The literature review engages with recent bibliography (last 5 years)

- The authors essentially provide adequate results that justify the publication, as the methodology section is immediately followed by the discussion section.

- The methodology is well developed. The aspects and stages of the methodology are properly explained.

- The methods applied is sufficient to understand the entire phenomenon that is analyzed.

- Findings make a contribution to theory in deep analysis of results presented.

- There is a good interpretation as well as policy and managerial implications.

Improvements

- Literature review hasn´t coverage of the study objectives and has an extensive background and review within the subject matter.

I would like to mention two aspects that should be improved.

The first is linked to the literature review: they start by talking about tourism gentrification. in traditional Industrial areas, which is already a very specific topic and then the authors generalise again with impacts of Tourism Gentrificification, in other words, they fail to specify traditional industrial areas. Then, when it comes to gentrification, some of the most relevant authors in this area are missing, even though this case is specific to Beijing.

Secondly, the fact that I surveyed the residents of these areas with specific characteristics does not allow me to extrapolate to all realities, because the reasons may not necessarily be the same. This not invalidate all the work that has been done about the dimensions linked to the stress threshold theory and the framework illustrating the impact of tourism gentrification on residents´ relocation decisions in traditional industrial areas.

In the implications, several tips and examples are given of how future studies and managers can adopt them in the future.

The limitations mention everything that limited the study.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

Thank you for giving me this opportunity to review the manuscript entitled “Residents’ perceptions of tourism gentrification in traditional industrial areas using Q methodology.” The topic is very trendy and important for understanding why residents decide to relocate. I have few comments.

1. Abstract

In the abstract, the purpose, data, method, results, and implications should not be noted in brief. Please add the data information. Specific information regarding the respondents participating in the Q methodology is not presented.

2. Introduction

Introduction is well written.

3. Literature review

“Stress Threshold theory” is not sufficiently discussed and the authors also need to add seminar work and recent articles for justification.

4. Q methodology

Selecting the important statements which can be in a pool of Q methodology is very important. The statements should also represent the important concepts based on literature review. However, In literature review, all important concepts based on previous research were not defined and discussed.  All-important concepts tested via Q methodology should be carefully defined. However, general tourism gentrification in traditional industrial areas are reported in literature review.

5. Method

The recruitment criteria for selecting 20 participants should be clearly noted.

Moreover, the criteria of a Likert scale as well as recruiting criteria can be helpful for readers.

6. The research procedures

This study includes both Q-methodology and interviews. The research procedures should be presented. Focusing on the results of Q methodology can be better. I am not sure how to analyze the interview contents.

7. Q sample

The relevance of the presented statements and theory or concepts can be important in method.

The authors should present how to select the statements in detail.

8. A number of the statements and the number of participants

In Q methodology, how do you test reliability? What efforts do you make to obtain high reliability and validity?

8. Results

What are the results of the correlations? The reporting of the results of Q-methods are not clearly presented.

9. The results

From page 8, results include the participants’ interview contents as well as the classified statements. The results should be clearly noted and focus on the results of Q-methodology.

10. Discussion

The conceptual model should be matched in the Q-statements. Does this study focus on residents’ stress? The terms may need to be negative?

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

Thank you for your revision based on the comments.  Even though the study adopted Q methodology with relatively small respondents, the contents and the results can be an important example of urban regeneration and the industrial tourism in China.
