Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

minor clarifications needed to cite author name in text rather than citation # (eg line 38, line 107)

Qualitative method design needs to be clarified/detailed in Methods section

Overall, great topic and clear analysis

Conclusions could be improved with suggestions for future research and/or application

Reviewer 2 Report

Thank you for the opportunity to read this interesting work. Learning chemistry concepts and ethical reasoning together in rich real-world contexts is a very compelling topic.

The paper is clear, well written and well argued. The methods used are appropriate to the study, and the literature cited is current and well-synthesised (and extensive!) The contribution to knowledge in science education is original and significant.

The paper does not mention research ethics, either in terms of review of the research by an Institutional Review Board/Research Ethics Board or in stating that participants (and their parents in the case of minors) gave free and informed consent to participate in the research study. It is essential that research papers in science education include this information.

The focus of the article is students' engagement with sustainability issues via solving ethical dilemmas in STEM classes. The article has a comprehensive structure and clear focus.  Discussion of findings is coherent, balanced, and compelling. The basis of the study is Ethical Dilemma Story Pedagogy (EDSP) in teaching Chemistry that is oriented to value-based learning.  Overall, the study is valuable for the international readership.

Title: Students' Engagement in Education as Sustainability: Implementing an Ethical Dilemma-STEAM Teaching Model in Chemistry Learning

Overview and general recommendation for authors:

The geneses of this paper are the reports of the results of implementing an integrated Ethical Dilemma-STEAM Teaching Model at four secondary schools in Jakarta

The title and abstract are appropriate for the content of the text.

The authors appropriately cite past literature with similar findings to theirs.

But your manuscript has a lot of issues:

  1. The research topic isn’t of great enough significance

1.1 The paper’s findings are incremental and do not advance the field

  1. A clear hypothesis hasn’t been established

Where are your hypotheses?

Where are these hypotheses tested?

Where are your results reported?

  1. Lack of originality

3.1 Your paper doesn’t present any new findings, concepts or methods

  1.      Lack of relevance

My best regards!
