Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

This study reviewed the role of Carbon Monoxide in Seed Physiology. In general, this review is well prepared and outline the current advancement in Carbon Monoxide effects on seed physiology and biochemistry, though the summaries on future prospect are still need to be improved.

L40, they found that…

L97, what is RWC?

L119-127, in this part, I would suggest a summary or comment on the uncertainty (or knowledge gaps that have not been solved) of CO role in root development.

L129, it should be noted that plant performance under stress is not only related to the CO-mediated physiological processes, other mechanisms are also involved.

L135, photosynthesis and transpiration…

L160-169, again, a brief comment the CO impact on photosynthesis and Stomata is needed.

L171, …, which is essential for…

L224-228, to gain an overview on CO effect on seed germination, it would be more appropriate to move Figure 2 at the front of the section ‘Germination’.

Comments on the Quality of English Language

The language should be carefully checked before it can be accepted for publication.

Author Response

We sincerely thank the reviewer for their valuable comments and suggestions, which have greatly contributed to improving the quality of our manuscript.

L40, they found that…

Corrected

L97, what is RWC?

It was stated in L100, we moved the full name for RWC into L97

L119-127, in this part, I would suggest a summary or comment on the uncertainty (or knowledge gaps that have not been solved) of CO role in root development.

We added proper information.

L129, it should be noted that plant performance under stress is not only related to the CO-mediated physiological processes, other mechanisms are also involved.

The reviewer is completely right, we add proper information that CO is just one of the molecules, which take a part in complex plant response to stress.

L135, photosynthesis and transpiration…

It was corrected.

L160-169, again, a brief comment the CO impact on photosynthesis and Stomata is needed.

We added some sentences to comment the role of CO.

L171, …, which is essential for…

Corrected

L224-228, to gain an overview on CO effect on seed germination, it would be more appropriate to move Figure 2 at the front of the section ‘Germination’.

Since Reviewer 2 did not specify the placement of Figure 2, we have decided to keep it at the end of the section dedicated to seed germination. In our opinion, this figure serves better as a summary and overview of the discussed impacts of CO on germination, as presented in the text and table, rather than as an introduction to this section. However, we are open to leaving the final decision regarding its placement to the editors.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The role of CO in plants as a signalling molecule is interesting. This review covers a decent amount of information. However, the text has to be rewritten. While some parts of the text are written very well, some information is repeated.  Use of words like ‘also’, ‘furthermore’ is in excess. The text must be rephrased in many places.

Abstract: Rewrite the abstract removing the “also” word that has been written multiple times.

Line 22 is a repeat of line 12-13 in a slightly different form. Kindly rephrase the sentences in order to avoid repetition.

A couple of more keywords should be included.

Line 64: soybean, tomato, sorghum, rice and pine (No references for these have been included).

Line 84: There is the mention of Table 1 but without any proper textual reference.

Lines 212-219: Correct the molecular formula of hydrogen peroxide.

Line 248: abolished the increase?

Line 268: Solanum lycopersicum in italics

Line 309: ‘hydrogen peroxide’- short form can be used after first mention of the compound.

Comments on the Quality of English Language

Some parts of the manuscript are written well but some need a lot of improvement. A careful check of the document is necessary.

We rewrote the text. We try to omit the repetition in the text as well as improved the English. We hope the present version is acceptable. All the corrections and modification were provided using track changes mode.

We rewrote the abstract.

Line 22 is a repeat of line 12-13 in a slightly different form. Kindly rephrase the sentences in order to avoid repetition.

It was modified.

A couple of more keywords should be included.

We added 4 keywords.

Line 64: soybean, tomato, sorghum, rice and pine (No references for these have been included).

We added a reference to Day et al. 2024.

Line 84: There is the mention of Table 1 but without any proper textual reference.

We added a proper sentence referring to Table 1.

Lines 212-219: Correct the molecular formula of hydrogen peroxide.

It was corrected.

Line 248: abolished the increase?

We changed it into counteract.

Line 268: Solanum lycopersicum in italics

It was corrected.

Line 309: ‘hydrogen peroxide’- short form can be used after first mention of the compound.

It was corrected.
