Digital Behaviors, Addictions, and Psychosocial Harms: Problematic Internet and Smartphone Use, Cyberbullying, Sports Betting, Substance Use, and Impulse-Control Disorders
Topic Information
Dear Colleagues,
Digital technologies are increasingly influencing communication, leisure, education, health, and risk-taking behaviors. This Topic calls for interdisciplinary research focusing on digital behaviors, addictions, and psychosocial harms experienced across different age groups, from childhood through adulthood. It covers issues like problematic internet and smartphone use; social media and gaming-related challenges; cyberbullying, online victimization, and digital violence; sports betting and online gambling; gambling-like mechanics and platform design; substance use such as alcohol and tobacco in digital settings; impulsivity and impulse-control disorders; emotional symptoms, sleep disturbances, and functional impairments; and the impact of advertising, algorithms, influencers, and commercial health determinants. We invite original research, systematic and scoping reviews, theoretical papers, methodological innovations, and evaluations of prevention, treatment, regulation, digital literacy, and harm reduction strategies. Emphasis is placed on developmental, clinical, family, school, cultural, and public health perspectives, including studies from low- and middle-income countries. This initiative aims to unify fragmented studies and promote evidence-based, contextual approaches to digital well-being and behavioral risks.
