In West Africa, there is a very close link between the phenomenon of trafficking and migrant smuggling. This article will analyze the pressure elements and the causes that drive sub-Saharan people to migrate, placing themselves in the hands of criminal networks that end up exploiting them—women and minors sexually, and men through forced labor. The main corridors departing from West Africa and the characteristics of the criminal groups exercising criminal governance will also be addressed. This research has used both primary and secondary sources, as well as empirical fieldwork consisting of interviews with security force officials, international humanitarian aid organizations, and academic experts on migration issues related to trafficking and smuggling. Our research reveals that the origin of migration is multifactorial. The violence experienced in West Africa, but also the misgovernance, the lack of opportunities for a very young population with limited prospects, and the human insecurity affecting the entire region, are the main reasons that compel people to migrate. In these migration processes, the safety of migrants is compromised as they are forced to start their journey through clandestine means, which exposes them to trafficking networks and thus to violence and exploitation. It is along the migration routes where trafficking and migrant smuggling converge. Full article

This study focuses on the Triangle of Central China and investigates the spatiotemporal evolution, driving factors, and impacts of population aging on regional sustainable development from 2000 to 2020. The study adopts an innovative two-scale analytical framework at the prefecture and district/county level, integrating spatial autocorrelation analysis, the Geodetector model, and geographically weighted regression. The results show a significant acceleration in population aging across the study area, accompanied by pronounced spatial clustering, particularly in western Hubei and the Wuhan metropolitan area. Over time, the spatial distribution has evolved from a relatively dispersed pattern to one of high concentration. Key drivers of the spatial heterogeneity of aging include economic disparities, demographic transitions, and the uneven spatial allocation of public services such as healthcare and education. These aging patterns profoundly affect the region’s potential for sustainable development. Accordingly, the study proposes a multi-scale collaborative governance strategy: At the prefecture level, efforts should focus on promoting the coordinated development of the silver economy and optimizing the spatial redistribution of healthcare resources; At the district and county level, priorities should include strengthening infrastructure, curbing the outflow of young labor, and improving access to basic public services. By integrating spatial analysis techniques with sustainable development policy recommendations, this study provides a basis for scientifically measuring, understanding, and managing demographic transitions. This is essential for achieving long-term socioeconomic sustainability in rapidly aging regions. Full article

In light of the changing demands of the labor market and the digital orientation of today’s student population, this study aims to examine the effectiveness of a digital game-based intervention as a tool for enhancing team adaptation and social perception in an academic environment. This research was designed as an experiment involving 90 university students who were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (n = 45) or a control group (n = 45). The experimental group participated in a multiplayer cooperative MOBA-type game, in which each participant assumed a specific team role. Before and after the intervention, participants completed a standardized questionnaire focused on team dynamics, including trust, orientation towards shared goals, and mutual awareness. The results from the Wilcoxon test and Mann–Whitney U test revealed statistically significant improvements in identifying team members’ strengths and weaknesses, a reduction in the perceived lack of trust, and an increased orientation toward shared goals. The findings confirm that a digital gaming environment can activate key mechanisms of team dynamics and may serve as an effective tool for supporting the adaptation of young employees in practice. Future research should include more diverse samples and incorporate objective observation alongside self-assessment. Full article

This article examines the intersecting forces of gender, class, and education in early twentieth-century Britain through a feminist reading of Pip Williams’ historical novel The Bookbinder of Jericho. Centering on the fictional character Peggy Jones—a working-class young woman employed in the Oxford University Press bindery—the study explores how women’s intellectual ambitions were constrained by economic hardship, institutional gatekeeping, and patriarchal social norms. By integrating close literary analysis with historical research on women bookbinders, educational reform, and the impact of World War I, the paper reveals how the novel functions as both a narrative of personal development and a broader critique of systemic exclusion. Drawing on the genre of the female Bildungsroman, the article argues that Peggy’s journey—from bindery worker to aspiring scholar—mirrors the real struggles of working-class women who sought education and recognition in a male-dominated society. It also highlights the significance of female solidarity, especially among those who served as volunteers, caregivers, and community organizers during wartime. Through the symbolic geography of Oxford and its working-class district of Jericho, the novel foregrounds the spatial and social divides that shaped women’s lives and labor. Ultimately, this study shows how The Bookbinder of Jericho offers not only a fictional portrait of one woman’s aspirations but also a feminist intervention that recovers and reinterprets the overlooked histories of British women workers. The novel becomes a literary space for reclaiming agency, articulating resistance, and criticizing the gendered boundaries of knowledge, work, and belonging. Full article

The present study addresses the need for valid and reliable tools to assess employability thinking among young people in training. In a labor market increasingly shaped by transversal skill demands, the objective was to construct and validate a scale adapted for secondary and post-secondary non-tertiary students. Grounded in strategic frameworks such as the Europe 2020 Strategy, the European Skills Agenda, and relevant Spanish legislation, an abbreviated version of the Graduate Skills and Attributes Scale (GSAS) was administered to a representative sample of 949 Andalusian students enrolled in compulsory secondary education, baccalaureate, or vocational training. A cross-sectional and exploratory research design was adopted, with all procedures conducted in accordance with ethical and legal standards and approved by the University of Granada’s ethics committee. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were performed, leading to a refined 28-item version of the instrument. Items were grouped into four well-defined factors: ethical self-regulation and achievement orientation, effective communication and collaborative working, proactivity and commitment to learning, and analytical thinking and information handling. The factors demonstrated high internal consistency and structural validity. These findings indicate that the scale is a clear and effective tool for assessing employability-related competencies and may assist in the design of educational interventions aimed at improving students’ professional development. In the Dutch labor market, where the number of vacancies exceeds the number of unemployed, many young adults still struggle to find meaningful work. This article explores their experiences as they develop career agency while encountering obstacles and barriers. Career agency is understood as an emergent phenomenon, shaped by both external limitations and intrapersonal development. Considering its relational and dialectical nature, we use Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) to explore complex agency development among young adults. Through in-depth interviews with 25 young adults, we identified four types of contradictions. These contradictions, often characterized by conflicting motives, can be paralyzing. Some emerge between personal motives and external environments, while others stem from conflicting internal motives. Although such contradictions may hinder career agency, they can also stimulate development and professional growth. Our analysis further highlights formative intraventions. In some instances, we discovered that young adults adjusted their motives, norms, values, and needs to align with the expectations of their new environments, or they took a stance to change those environments. The ability to envision possible actions within their context appears to be crucial. Understanding these contradictions and responses can help mentors develop interventions that support young adults in navigating labor market challenges and building sustainable careers. Full article

The precise identification and classification of tree species in young forests during their early development stages are vital for forest management and silvicultural efforts that support their growth and renewal. However, achieving accurate geolocation and species classification through field-based surveys is often a labor-intensive and complicated task. Remote sensing technologies combined with machine learning techniques present an encouraging solution, offering a more efficient alternative to conventional field-based methods. This study aimed to detect and classify young forest tree species using remote sensing imagery and machine learning techniques. The study mainly involved two different objectives: first, tree species detection using the latest version of You Only Look Once (YOLOv12), and second, semantic segmentation (classification) using random forest, Categorical Boosting (CatBoost), and a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). To the best of our knowledge, this marks the first exploration utilizing YOLOv12 for tree species identification, along with the study that integrates digital aerial photogrammetry with Planet imagery to achieve semantic segmentation in young forests. The study used two remote sensing datasets: RGB imagery from unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) ortho photography and RGB-NIR from PlanetScope. For YOLOv12-based tree species detection, only RGB from ortho photography was used, while semantic segmentation was performed with three sets of data: (1) Ortho RGB (3 bands), (2) Ortho RGB + canopy height model (CHM) + Planet RGB-NIR (8 bands), and (3) ortho RGB + CHM + Planet RGB-NIR + 12 vegetation indices (20 bands). With three models applied to these datasets, nine machine learning models were trained and tested using 57 images (1024 × 1024 pixels) and their corresponding mask tiles. The YOLOv12 model achieved 79% overall accuracy, with Scots pine performing best (precision: 97%, recall: 92%, mAP50: 97%, mAP75: 80%) and Norway spruce showing slightly lower accuracy (precision: 94%, recall: 82%, mAP50: 90%, mAP75: 71%). For semantic segmentation, the CatBoost model with 20 bands outperformed other models, achieving 85% accuracy, 80% Kappa, and 81% MCC, with CHM, EVI, NIRPlanet, GreenPlanet, NDGI, GNDVI, and NDVI being the most influential variables. These results indicate that a simple boosting model like CatBoost can outperform more complex CNNs for semantic segmentation in young forests. Full article

Amid urbanization, many forest farmers have migrated for work, leading to a shortage of young labor in forestry. Socialized prevention and control (SPC) measures have emerged as a new forestry model. By integrating forestland property rights theory, SPC economic principles, and collaborative disaster governance, this study compares the econometrics methods of seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) and structural equation models (SEMs) to address correlation and endogeneity issues. It aims to understand forest farmers’ willingness to pay for SPC services, purchase forest insurance, and join as forest rangers. The findings offer theoretical and practical insights that address current challenges and rationalize SPC promotion costs, filling gaps in the existing literature. The results indicate that high-quality foresters with more home-planted forests are more inclined to hire SPC companies, while better-educated farmers are less likely to purchase forest insurance. Western forest farmers, highly reliant on forests, show greater willingness to become rangers under village committee organization. Farmers organized by committees or with prevention experience suggest SPC costs around USD $65/ha and forest premiums at USD $5/ha, with high-quality farmers proposing a ranger salary of USD $190/month. Recommendations include collecting SPC funds from farmers and supplementing through local finances; enhancing the forest insurance system; monitoring SPC companies; and recruiting young, skilled rangers. This study estimates the labor market returns to non-cognitive skills among the youth under 30 years old during the early career stage. Using data from the Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS-HSE) for 2016 and 2019, it examines the effects of the Big Five personality traits (openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and emotional stability) on hourly wages. To account for potential heterogeneity in the effect of non-cognitive skills along the wage distribution, a quantile linear mixed model is employed, estimating returns at the 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, and 90th percentiles while controlling for repeated observations with random intercepts at the individual level. Inverse probability weighting is applied to address the selection of employment. The results indicate that openness yields the highest returns for young workers, though its effect diminishes after controlling for educational attainment. By controlling for education, the model identifies the effect of conscientiousness below the median wage level, and that of extraversion above. Finally, the study finds that the impact of non-cognitive skills on wages evolves over the life course. First, the effects of non-cognitive skills on wages vary a lot in the youth group and the entire working population (ages 16–65). Furthermore, breaking the data down by age cohorts reveals how their significance and magnitude shift at different career stages. Full article

The significance of the quality issue in Industry 4.0 increases due to the dynamically changing economy. Not only selected workers who form the quality department must be aware of this fact, but each member of the staff must be as well. A considerable portion of responsibility concerning the proper preparation of workers in the field of quality relies on the education system that should help graduates develop a pro-quality attitude. In order to fulfill this aim, schools must use a number of tools, including, among others, the ISO 9001 quality management system—one of the elements introduced by the author’s model of factors influencing the development of students’ pro-quality attitude. The subject of this article is to determine the impact of the quality management system implemented in schools on the development of students’ pro-quality attitude—an issue that allows us, on the one hand, to ensure a higher level of education and, on the other hand, to use it as an element of smart learning. For the needs of the performed research, the author has collected secondary data from the literature analysis, as well as primary data from surveys performed on 1294 people. The research results deserve the attention of people who manage schools to improve the use of the quality management system implemented in schools in order to develop students’ attitudes towards quality and to improve the system itself more effectively. They are also important for enterprises, which can positively influence young people’s (future participants of the labor market based on Industry 4.0) education through cooperation with schools. The research performed by the author proved the hypothesis according to which the implementation of the quality management system is not sufficient to ensure effective development of students’ pro-quality attitudes. The decline in the young population in rural areas has led to a shortage of skilled labor in agriculture. While the use of technology and capital is often suggested as a solution, it may not be sufficient, especially with the aging rural population. The goal of this study was to examine the factors influencing young people’s decisions to stay in agriculture, and propose solutions. On the other hand, this study presents policy recommendations aimed at strengthening implementation tools for sustainable development and revitalizing global partnerships under SDG 17. Data were collected through surveys with 2398 young individuals aged 15–29 across 27 rural settlements in Turkey. A binary logit regression model was used to analyze the probability of young people remaining in agriculture. The results show that, similar to studies in developing economies, young men were more likely to stay in agriculture than young women. Additionally, having personal income or assets, as well as larger land and livestock holdings in the household, increased the likelihood of staying in agriculture. Conversely, migration from households and higher education levels decreased the probability. The study emphasizes the need for projects that improve the welfare of rural youth. Economic development alone is insufficient; policies integrating agricultural and social factors, including family dynamics, could be more effective in ensuring youth retention in agriculture and supporting sustainable agricultural production. The evolving labor environment underscores the critical role of cognitive and non-cognitive (soft) skills in fostering workforce adaptability and enhancing labor market outcomes. This study investigates the combined influence of these skills on the probability of employment, focusing on the Kenyan labor market, where high youth unemployment and job market mismatches persist despite government interventions and education sector reforms. Traditionally, emphasis has been placed on cognitive skills, with limited integration of non-cognitive skills into educational curricula, exacerbating the disconnect between youth competencies and market demands. Using binary logistic regression, this study evaluates factors influencing youth employment, highlighting the complementarity of cognitive and non-cognitive skills. Findings reveal that individuals possessing a blend of these skills have higher employment prospects, with notable improvements for young women possessing agreeableness and digital literacy. Additionally, factors such as marital status and higher education levels positively influence employability. These results underscore the equal importance of personality traits and cognitive abilities in labor market success. Policymakers are urged to prioritize curriculum reforms that integrate non-cognitive skill development and encourage employers to include assessments of these skills in hiring practices to address persistent labor market mismatches. Actively coping with the aging of the rural population is an inevitable requirement for the implementation of high-quality development of modern agriculture and the comprehensive promotion of rural revitalization. Agricultural socialized services can effectively integrate the two key elements of technology and people in agricultural production and management. Based on research data on the livelihoods and economic behavior of 1023 farming households in 2021, this paper explores the impact of an aging population on the implementation of socialized agricultural services by rural households. The results of the study show that population aging has a significant positive influence on the degree of agricultural socialized services. The aging of the population has a significant positive influence on unified irrigation services, mechanized farming services, straw collection services, and origin processing services, which are labor-replacing and highly mechanized agricultural science and technology socialized services. The results of the heterogeneity analysis show that both young and middle-aged rural households and older rural households have a clear demand for agricultural socialized services. Based on this, we propose policy recommendations in two aspects: guiding land transfer in the context of rural aging and establishing a variety of agricultural technology socialized service types. This study investigates how perceived parental criticism is associated with career confidence in students and workers, considering the mediating role of the fear of an uncertain future. In a rapidly changing labor market, students, as young individuals navigating early career decisions, experience heightened uncertainty about their future, especially regarding their professional paths. This research aims to verify whether perceived parental criticism negatively affects career confidence both directly and indirectly through the mediating role of fear of an uncertain future, and whether occupational status (being a student or already working) influences this relationship. Data were collected from a sample of 310 participants, consisting of 108 students and 202 workers. Multigroup structural equation models were used to test the mediation model simultaneously on students and workers. The results indicate that, in students, the relationship between parental criticism and career confidence is fully mediated by fear of an uncertain future, while in workers these associations are weaker and not significant. These findings suggest that students are more vulnerable to uncertainty, as they are in an early stage of career development, while workers may benefit from greater independence and emotional regulation skills. The study highlights the impact of perceived parental criticism on career confidence and the moderating role of occupational status, suggesting the need for interventions that reduce the fear of an uncertain future and encourage greater adaptability to career-related challenges. Employability has been widely studied from various theoretical and methodological perspectives. However, certain dimensions of the determinants of employability remain underexplored, particularly in the context of a rapidly evolving labor market shaped by digital transformation and artificial intelligence and socio-economic contextual factors. The aim of this study is to analyze the dimensions influencing the employability of young Moroccans through an exploratory qualitative approach, based on structured roundtable discussions organized at the Careers and Skills Centre of Laâyoune. The findings identify eight key pillars of employability, aligned with the current labor market demands, encompassing educational and training opportunities, hard and soft skills, geographical mobility, entrepreneurial and project management skills, adaptation to emerging professions, regional economic infrastructure, and state support. These insights provide a comprehensive framework for understanding employability dynamics, offering actionable recommendations for educators, policymakers, and employers. This research stands out by integrating a contextualized approach to employability, bridging global labor market trends with region-specific socio-economic realities. Full article
