Sludge management is one of the most costly and technically challenging components of municipal wastewater treatment, highlighting the need for sustainable and low-cost stabilization technologies. This study evaluated a pilot-scale vermifiltration system for municipal sewage sludge stabilization under varying hydraulic and organic loading conditions. Three vermifilter pilots incorporating Eisenia andrei earthworms were operated using lightweight expanded clay aggregate (LECA), high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic media, and mineral pumice. The systems were tested at hydraulic loading rates (HLRs) of 150, 300, and 450 L/m2·d. Performance was assessed using chemical oxygen demand (COD), total solids (TS), volatile solids (VS), VS/TS ratio, sludge volume index (SVI), and sludge dewaterability indicators, including specific resistance to filtration (SRF) and time to filtration (TTF). Optimal performance occurred at an HLR of 150 L/m2·d, achieving maximum reductions of 49% in COD, 30% in TS, and 40% in VS, along with an SVI reduction of up to 78%. Increasing HLR significantly reduced treatment efficiency due to shorter retention times and biofilm washout. A regression analysis showed the strongest association between COD removal and organic loading rate (R2 = 0.63) under the coupled HLR–OLR conditions tested, while weaker correlations were observed for SVI and VS/TS. Dewaterability improved markedly after vermifiltration, particularly in the LECA-based system. Although filter media type did not significantly affect COD or SVI removal, pumice and plastic media provided greater hydraulic stability at higher loadings. These results demonstrate that vermifiltration is an effective and environmentally sustainable option for municipal sludge stabilization when operated under controlled hydraulic conditions. Continuous ethanol fermentation is crucial for renewable bio-manufacturing, but delay-induced ethanol inhibition triggers self-oscillations via Hopf bifurcations, undermining productivity and stability. This study investigates instability mechanisms and proposes a washout-filter-aided control strategy. Using Hopf bifurcation theory, the critical delay time τc (20.97 h) was quantified, and it confirmed that τ > τc (intrinsic τ = 21.72 h) induces oscillations. Closed-loop analysis reveals that the filter extends τc to 25.57 h (e.g., K = 2, d = 0.5), expanding the stability margin by modulating ethanol dynamics through phase-shifted feedback. Numerical simulations and experimental validation demonstrate effective oscillation suppression, maintaining steady-state substrate (S* = 84.32 g/L), biomass (X* = 6.92 g/L), and ethanol (P* = 22.02 g/L) concentrations without sacrificing productivity. Unlike conventional methods, the strategy retains the system’s equilibrium structure, resists noise, and requires no additional hardware. This work bridges bifurcation analysis with practical control, offering a robust, scalable solution for industrial continuous ethanol production to mitigate delay-induced instabilities. Full article

This paper presents a robust control strategy for three-phase inverters that combines Sliding Mode Control with a Washout Filter (SMC-w) to achieve low harmonic distortion and high dynamic stability. The proposed approach addresses the critical challenge of maintaining the stability of a high-quality output signal while ensuring robustness against disturbances and adaptability under variable, unbalanced, and nonlinear loads. The proposed hybrid controller integrates the fast response and disturbance rejection capability of SMC with the filtering properties of the washout stage, effectively mitigating low-frequency chattering and steady-state offsets. A detailed stability analysis is provided to ensure the closed-loop convergence of the SMC–w. Simulation results obtained in MATLAB–Simulink demonstrate significant improvements in transient response, total harmonic distortion, and robustness under unbalanced and nonlinear load conditions compared to conventional control methods. The inverter demonstrated rapid tracking of the reference signals with a minimal error margin of 3%, effective frequency regulation with a low steady-state error, and resilience to input disturbances and load variations. For instance, under a load variation from 20 Ω to 5 Ω, the system maintained the output voltage accuracy within a 3% error threshold. In addition, the input perturbations and frequency shifts in the reference signals were effectively rejected, confirming the robustness of the control strategy. Furthermore, the integration of the SMC proved to be highly effective in reducing harmonic distortion and delivering a stable and high-quality sinusoidal output. The integration of the washout filter minimized the chattering phenomenon typically associated with the SMC, further enhancing the smooth response and reliability of the system. This study highlights the potential of SMC–w to optimize power quality and operational stability. This study offers significant insights into the development of advanced inverter systems that can operate in dynamic and challenging environments. Full article

Secondary control (SC) under false data injection attacks (FDIAs) in microgrids can compromise control decisions and disrupt the normal operation of the system. This paper proposes a washout-filter power-sharing-based resilient control strategy to tackle FDIAs. This strategy ensures the primary control continues to function normally by enabling the timely disconnection of the attacked SC. To address the under-rated operation state caused by the loss of SC, washout-filter power sharing is activated to restore the rated operation. Furthermore, for the FDIAs that affect both system frequency and voltage simultaneously after power sharing, a voltage compensation control loop is designed for the local voltage drop, allowing the attacked voltage value to further recover to the rated value. This strategy secures a steady frequency and enhanced voltage amplitude in the system, achieving a resilient effect against FDIAs. The proposed strategy has been validated through various simulation scenarios and FPGA-in-the-loop experiments. Full article

To migrate Loss of Control In-flight, the number one cause of aviation fatalities, pilots need to undergo upset prevention and recovery training with flight simulators. The fidelity of a moving base flight simulator is greatly dependent on the washout algorithm of the Stewart platform, which may reach the workspace limits when simulating the aircraft recovery from upset conditions. In this paper, a washout algorithm optimal design method based on the model predictive control technique is proposed for flight simulator upset prevention and recovery training. The parameters of the washout algorithm are calculated directly based on the platform model, and the system limits are explicitly taken into account. The human perception model is incorporated into the optimization problem, for which the objective is to minimize the pilot’s perceived motion mismatch between the real flight and the simulator training. Simulations are conducted and compared with the classical filter-based washout algorithm. Responses of the flight simulator model show that the proposed method can improve the motion cueing effect when the aircraft is in upset conditions. Full article

Information fusion integrates aspects of data and knowledge mostly on the basis that system information is accumulative/distributive, but a subtle case emerges for a system with bifurcations, which is always un-linearizable and exacerbates information acquisition and presents a control problem. In this paper, the problem of an un-linearizable system related to system observation and control is addressed, and Andronov–Hopf bifurcation is taken as a typical example of an un-linearizable system and detailed. Firstly, the properties of a linear/linearized system is upon commented. Then, nonlinear degeneracy for the normal form of Andronov–Hopf bifurcation is analyzed, and it is deduced that the cubic terms are an integral part of the system. Afterwards, the theoretical study on feedback stabilization is conducted between the normal-form Andronov–Hopf bifurcation and its linearized counterpart, where stabilization using washout-filter-aided feedback is compared, and it is found that by synergistic controller design, the dual-conjugate-unstable eigenvalues can be stabilized by single stable washout filter. Finally, the high-dimensional ethanol fermentation model is taken as a case study to verify the proposed bifurcation control method. Full article

The accuracy of control systems applied to motors is influenced by uncertainties and abrupt variations of the load and system parameters. Some robust control strategies have been proposed in the literature for responding to disturbances and uncertainties, parametric variations, and non-linearities, adding complex control rules and considerable computational efforts. Therefore, this paper presents the application of a sliding mode control method based on a washout filter (SMC-w) for speed control in a permanent magnet DC motor. In addition, the dynamic behavior of the SMC-w is evaluated under changes in the reference speed and load torque. The response of the control system under variations of the speed reference signal and load torque were studied. The results were contrasted with conventional proportional integral derivative (PID) control to evaluate the efficiency and improvement of the SMC-w. The qualitative shape of the transient response of the speed and current concerning changes in the reference speed is symmetric for the SMC-w controller, but the values of overshoot, settling time, and steady-state error are different. This technique has a great potential for industrial application as it controls efficiently with low computational cost and a simple design, which benefits its implementation in practical environments. High integration of renewable energy resources, such as wind turbines, to the power grid decreases the power system inertia. To improve the frequency response of a low-inertia system, virtual inertia approach can be used. This letter proposes a control method to decrease the frequency transients and restore frequency to its nominal value. A wind turbine usually works based on maximum power point tracking (MPPT) curves to achieve the maximum power. In this letter, the proposed controller uses a non-MPPT method to leave power for frequency regulation during transients. Moreover, it uses a washout filter-based method to remove the steady-state error in the frequency. Simulation results in the PSCAD environment validate the improved performance of the proposed method during load changes by comparing it with the MPPT and non-MPPT methods. Full article

Power converters (PCs) with their control techniques help regulate voltages of nodes in microgrids with different types of loads such as resistive, inductive, nonlinear, constant power, or critical loads. However, constant power loads (CPLs) affect the stability of the voltage in the output of PCs and are usually difficult to regulate with traditional control techniques. The sliding-mode control (SMC) with the washout filter technique has been recently proposed to address this issue, but studies that consider the phenomenon and parameters present in real systems are required. Therefore, this paper focuses on evaluating the dynamic behavior of an SMC based on a washout filter using three different loads: A constant impedance load (CIL), a nonlinear CPL, and a combination of CIL and CPL. The CIL considered a resistance connected to the circuit, whereas the nonlinear CPL was designed by using a buck converter with zero average dynamics and fixed-point induction control techniques (ZAD-FPIC). The tests consisted of creating some variations in the reference signals to identify the output voltage and the error that the control brings according to the different loads. Besides, this study focuses on representing the dynamic behavior of signals when loads change, considering quantization effects, system discretization, delay effects, and parasitic resistors. Additionally, bifurcation diagrams are created by changing the control parameter k and plotting the regulated voltage and the error produced in the output signals. To illustrate the advantages of the SMC with the washout filter technique, a comparison was made with other techniques such as the proportional–integral–derivative (PID) and conventional SMC by varying the load. The results showed that SMC with the washout filter technique was superior to the PID and the conventional SMC because it stabilizes the signal faster and has a low steady-state error. Additionally, the control system regulates well the output voltage with the three types of load and the system remains stable when changing the parameter k for values greater than 1, with a low error in the steady-state operation. In this paper, a droop washout filter controller (DWC), composed of a conventional droop controller and a washout filter controller, is proposed. The droop controller is used to ensure the “plug-and-play” capability, and the droop gain is set small. The washout filter is introduced to compensate the active power dynamic performance (APDP). Compared to the droop controller, the DWC can achieve accurate active power sharing and smaller frequency difference without losing the APDP. Additionally, a novel modeling technology is proposed, using which a small-signal model for an island microgrid (MG) is constructed as a singular system. The system’s stability is analyzed and the DWC is verified using real-time (RT-LAB) simulation with hardware in the loop (HIL). Full article

Analysis and controlling of bifurcation for a class of chaotic Van der Pol- Duffing system with multiple unknown parameters are conducted. The stability of the equilibrium of the system is studied by using Routh-Hurwitz criterion, and the critical value of Hopf bifurcation is investigated. Based on the center manifold theory and normal form reduction, the stability index of bifurcation solution is given. Linear and nonlinear washout filter feedback controllers are designed respectively to control the bifurcation critical value and the amplitude of the limit cycle. Numerical simulation results are presented to illustrate analytical results found. Full article
