Purpose: Maintaining fluid homeostasis is crucial, and replenishing electrolytes—particularly sodium (Na+)—is critical for effective rehydration after thermal hypohydration. Despite the growing consumption of carbonated water (CW), its impact on post-hypohydration body fluid balance, either alone or combined with electrolytes, remains inadequately investigated. Therefore, this study was designed to examine the separate and interactive effects of carbonation and electrolyte provision in rehydration fluids—utilizing a 2 × 2 factorial design (carbonation × electrolytes)—on ingestive behavior and systemic fluid balance following mild thermal stress-induced hypohydration. Methods: Subjects (eight women and seven men, age range: 19–25 years) were dehydrated by performing three bouts of stepping exercise for 20 min, separated by 10 min of rest, at 25 °C. Following the dehydration protocol, subjects ingested pure water (W), CW (gas volume, 3.43 ± 0.20 (mean ± standard deviation)), electrolyte-added water (EW), or electrolyte-added CW (ECW) (gas volume, 3.04 ± 0.29 (mean ± standard deviation)) ad libitum. EW and ECW contained 19 mEq/L Na+. We assessed ingestive behavior and body fluid balance during the 180 min rehydration period. Results: The dehydration protocol induced hypohydration by ~10 g/kg body weight (~1% of body weight). Cumulative fluid intake was greater in the W trial than in the CW, EW, and ECW trials. Cumulative urine output was greater in the W and CW trials than in the EW trial. The fluid retention ratio was greater in the EW and ECW trials than in the CW trial. Consequently, the final fluid recovery was lower in the CW trial compared to the W, EW, and ECW trials; however, the combination of carbonation and electrolytes (ECW) did not significantly surpass the non-carbonated trials (W and EW) due to the reduced intake volume caused by carbonation. Conclusions: The data suggest that ad libitum ingestion of carbonated water is less effective than plain water for recovering from mild hypohydration (~1% body weight loss), as it reduces spontaneous fluid intake. However, electrolyte supplementation mitigates this reduced recovery by attenuating diuresis and consequently improving fluid retention ratio. Full article

Background: Accurate estimation of water and energy requirements is fundamental for establishing dietary reference values in young adults. However, evidence integrating objectively measured energy expenditure with detailed water turnover components remains limited in Chinese populations. Objectives: To quantify water intake, water loss, and energy expenditure in healthy young college students, and to examine how energy metabolism is associated with specific components of water turnover under free-living conditions. Methods: Twenty-one healthy adults aged 18–25 years participated in a 14-day observational study conducted in Beijing, China. Total energy expenditure (TEE) was measured over 14 days using the doubly labeled water (DLW) method. Physical activity was monitored over 7 consecutive days using a triaxial accelerometer. Water intake was assessed using multiple methods: water from beverages (including plain drinking water and other beverages) was recorded over 7 days using 24 h fluid intake records, while water from food was measured during days 5–7 using weighed food records combined with duplicate portion and direct drying methods. Urinary and fecal water loss were quantified using 24 h collections conducted during days 5–7. Metabolic water production and insensible water losses were estimated using established physiological equations. Multivariable linear regression analyses were conducted to examine associations between energy-related variables and components of water turnover. Results: Mean total daily water intake was 3023 mL, with water from beverages accounting for 54.1%, water from food for 36.7%, and metabolic water for 9.1%. Mean total daily water loss was 1931 mL, predominantly from urinary excretion (81.0%). DLW-measured TEE averaged 2018.6 kcal/day and was higher in males than in females. Most regression models examining total water intake and beverage-derived water were not statistically significant, and no consistent associations were observed between these variables and total energy intake, TEE, or PAEE. In contrast, TEE was positively associated with metabolic water production and respiratory water loss (both p < 0.001). Significant associations with total energy intake were observed for water from food and fecal water loss (both p < 0.01), whereas other water intake components showed no significant associations. Conclusions: In young adults, energy metabolism appears to be more closely associated with physiologically regulated components of water turnover than with voluntary water intake. These findings suggest a divergence between endogenous and behaviorally regulated pathways of water turnover and highlight the importance of considering component-specific water dynamics when examining hydration and energy balance, although confirmation in larger studies is warranted. Background: Vitamin D deficiency remains a widespread public health issue in Europe, despite the availability of sunlight, dietary sources, supplements, and food fortification. National fortification strategies differ substantially in their regulatory approaches, food vehicles, and fortification levels, influencing the population’s vitamin D intake and status. Objective: The primary objective of this study was to map vitamin D food fortification policies across European Union (EU) Member States, European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries, and the United Kingdom (UK), focusing on regulatory frameworks, eligible food categories, and implementation models. Methods: A structured review of national legislation and official guidance on vitamin D food fortification was conducted between December 2025 and March 2026 across EU Member States (n = 27), EFTA countries (n = 4), and the UK. For EU Member States, the framework established by Regulation (EC) No 1925/2006 was examined alongside national implementation measures. For EFTA countries and the UK, corresponding national legislation and official regulatory guidance were reviewed. Data were extracted on fortification policy status, eligible food categories, legal basis, and fortification levels. Targeted searches of PubMed and Scopus were performed to identify modeling studies and policy analyses supporting the interpretation of the findings. Results: Fortification policies show marked heterogeneity. Mandatory fortification is limited to a few countries and specific foods: Finland (homogenized skim milk), Sweden (low-fat milk, fermented dairy, plant-based alternatives, and fat spreads), Belgium (margarine and selected fats), and Poland (margarine and fat spreads). In most other European countries, vitamin D fortification is voluntary under EU legislation or equivalent national legislation, depending on market uptake. Food vehicles vary regionally, with Northern Europe extending fortification beyond fats to include fluid milk and plant-based drinks, whereas other regions mainly fortify margarines, cereals, dairy products, and plant-based beverages. Fortification levels also differ, with some countries specifying maximal or exact levels, while others lack national standards. Data on fortified foods are limited in several Central and Southern European countries. Modeling indicates that multi-vehicle fortification is more effective than single-vehicle approaches, safely increasing population intakes while reducing deficiency prevalence. Conclusions: Vitamin D fortification policies across Europe are highly heterogeneous. Most countries rely on voluntary approaches, which provide limited coverage. Strengthening policy through mandatory and well-coordinated multi-vehicle strategies, informed by modeling and population-based studies, can improve vitamin D intake, reduce deficiency prevalence, and enhance health equity. Environmental enrichment, such as lighting, has affected the behaviors, welfare, and production of commercial broiler chickens. However, most studies have focused on constant light intensities to determine their effect on welfare and performance. Research indicates that the significant contrast of light intensities in broiler houses promotes pronounced daily patterns of behavior and activity, impacting broiler chicken health. Birds exhibited preference behaviors in bright-intensity light during active behaviors, such as eating and drinking, but in darker areas when resting. Light intensity preferences may be associated with the voluntary instinctive movement of birds by providing choices for birds. Increasing broiler chickens’ movement may boost welfare, especially leg health, which is a leading cause of culling and late mortality in commercial production. In this review, we discuss the progress and results of practical environmental enrichments, enrichment lighting, and huts in commercial broiler houses. We briefly address interpretations of improved welfare and performance and suggest directions for future research that may interest poultry scientists. Full article

Alcohol consumption during pregnancy and lactation remains a significant global issue. Preventive policies have proven insufficient, and consumption rates remain high, mainly due to a lack of awareness, the misconception that only high alcohol intake harms the fetus, inconsistent medical advice, and pre-existing alcohol use disorders. Alcohol consumption is linked to child harm during critical stages of development. Using a recently published model of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) developed by our group, we analyzed brain changes in mothers who consumed alcohol during pregnancy and lactation and the behavioral consequences at the emotional-cognitive level and in caring for their offspring. We also considered the previous drinking history, using the paradigm of voluntary pre-gestational alcohol consumption. In addition, from gestational day 7 (GD7) until the day of sacrifice, mothers received a 3 g/kg dose of alcohol every 12 h via gavage. Our findings revealed deficiencies in maternal care, anxiety and depressive-like behavior, and aversive stimulus learning disturbances. These were associated with changes in gene targets linked to stress-axis regulation, reward circuits, and neuroplasticity. Additionally, we observed increased microgliosis and astrogliosis, indicating neuroinflammation in brain regions involved in cognition and emotional states’ regulation. Full article

With ketamine gaining attention as a therapeutic drug, oral administration offers an effective alternative to traditional parenteral routes. However, a significant gap remains in understanding its use via voluntary ingestion. This preliminary study aimed to explore the feasibility of oral ketamine self-administration in mice (Mus musculus), while investigating the effects of low concentrations on the brain, liver, and kidney. Adult mice were divided into three groups and received ketamine in their drinking water for 16 days at 0 (control), 5 (K5), or 10 mg/L (K10). A transient decrease in water consumption was observed in both sexes in the K10 group; however, only females in this group showed differences in ketamine intake between groups on some days. Oxidative stress markers measured in the brain, liver, and kidney only revealed higher catalase activity in the brains of females. No significant alterations were observed in liver and kidney function in either sex, nor in inflammation, apoptosis, or DNA damage in kidney tissues. Overall, these findings support the viability of voluntary oral ketamine administration and accentuate the need to refine the proposed model, not only to prevent water consumption inhibition but also to extend the exposure period, explore potential sex-related differences in ketamine intake, and further confirm the safety of oral ketamine administration. Background/Objectives: Voluntary stopping of eating and drinking (VSED) is a way to hasten death or end life prematurely. VSED is controversial, and research is essential to inform this debate. The aim was to systematically synthesize empirical data on the attitudes, motives, and experiences related to VSED from the perspective of caregivers. Methods: This systematic mixed-methods review (PROSPERO CRD42022283743) included qualitative and quantitative research. The MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Google Scholar, and BELIT databases were searched for English and German articles published between 1 January 2013 and 12 November 2021. Studies examining experiences, attitudes, and knowledge regarding VSED were eligible. We analyzed the data inductively after quantitative data transformation. Quality and confidence were assessed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) and GRADE-CERQual approach, respectively. Results: We identified 22 articles, including 16 studies. The participants were healthcare professionals and relatives, but not those who chose VSED. The motives for VSED are based on high symptom burdens and are closely related to self-determination. Most perceive VSED as a natural death and accept the patient’s decision. However, this acceptance also depends on other factors, such as patient characteristics. Most healthcare professionals would accompany patients during VSED, sometimes leading to advocacy. Relatives often play an active role in VSED and may experience distressing grief if they struggle with their support or the dying situation. The confidence in the review findings ranged from moderate to very low. Our findings on the challenging and positive experiences related to VSED and the resulting needs have been published elsewhere. Conclusions: VSED is a complex phenomenon affecting patients, nursing staff, physicians, and relatives. We provide an empirical basis for VSED to support research, debate, and practice. Full article

Background and Objectives: Alcohol consumption has been a longstanding public health concern and known link to violence. The aims of this study were to analyze alcohol-related homicide cases in Lithuania, focusing on the prevalence of binge drinking among perpetrators and victims, the situational and behavioral patterns leading to violence, and the legal outcomes of these cases. Materials and Methods: This study employed a retrospective analysis of court case law of criminal cases of the year 2019. The analysis was conducted by combining qualitative and quantitative analytical approaches. Results: The findings revealed that 84.6% of homicides occurred during binge drinking events. Alcohol intoxication was prevalent among both perpetrators (92.3%) and victims (86.5%), emphasizing the dual role of alcohol in homicide cases. Interpersonal violence was the primary pattern of homicide (78.8%), while planned homicides accounted for 21.2%. Thematic content analysis of the cases revealed that Lithuanian courts consistently regard alcohol consumption as an aggravating factor that contributes to the commission of violent crimes and influences the severity of criminal punishment. This reflects a judicial position that voluntary intoxication does not lessen legal responsibility, despite its effects on impairing judgment, heightening aggression and impulsivity, and escalating conflicts into deadly violence. Conclusions: Our findings revealed that the majority of alcohol-involved homicides occurred during binge drinking events, in a domestic environment, and because of unplanned acts of interpersonal violence. Targeted public health interventions should focus on strengthening alcohol control policies and enforcing stricter regulations to discourage binge drinking environments. Full article

Worldwide, environmental pollution is a major contributor to illness and mortality, encompassing toxic elements, air pollutants, agricultural pesticides, and contaminated food and water. In patients with end-stage kidney disease, several factors—including impaired renal excretion, the degree of renal impairment, medication use, dialysate contamination, the quality of dialysis water, and metabolic changes—may lead to the accumulation of toxic elements in hemodialysis patients. This study aimed to assess toxic element levels in adults undergoing hemodialysis compared to a control group and to investigate the correlation between parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels, uremic pruritus, anemia and toxic element concentrations. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 60 adult patients undergoing regular hemodialysis for at least three months. Another group of 60 apparently healthy adult voluntaries with matched age and sex with the patient group served as the control. The Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) method was used to measure the concentrations of serum levels of aluminum (Al), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and arsenic (As) for both groups, as well as in drinking water and dialysate water. The hemodialysis group exhibited significantly higher levels of Al, Pb, Cd, Cr, and As compared to the control group. Serum Pb levels showed a significant negative correlation with PTH, while serum ferritin levels were negatively correlated with Cr. However, no significant correlation was found between toxic element levels and uremic pruritus or anemia. Toxic element concentrations in dialysis and drinking water samples were within acceptable limits and below the detection threshold set by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation/American National Standards Institute (AAMI/ANSI). Therefore, elevated toxic element levels in hemodialysis patients may not be primarily attributable to drinking water or dialysis. Full article

Background/Objectives: Artificial sweeteners are commonly used food additives that provide sweetness without calories. Once considered harmless due to their lack of metabolism, recent studies suggest that they may have unintended effects, potentially stimulating appetite and increasing food intake, leading to weight gain. This study aimed to assess consumer perceptions of artificial sweeteners in food, examine consumption frequencies of products containing them, and explore their potential influence on body mass index. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using two voluntary and anonymous surveys administered via Google Forms. Results: The study included 649 participants: 324 parents of preschool and school-aged children and 325 university and secondary school students. A substantial proportion of parents (59.3%) recognized artificial sweeteners as common sugar substitutes in beverages like juices, soft drinks, and protein drinks. Awareness was notably higher among students (88.9%). While most participants held a negative attitude toward artificial sweeteners, their awareness and engagement with food label reading were low. Multivariate linear regression identified significant associations: Male gender (β = 1.17, p < 0.001) and older age (β = 0.42, p < 0.001) were associated with higher BMI. Additionally, participants who rarely or never consumed carbonated soft drinks had a lower BMI (β = −1.48, p = 0.039), while those who occasionally consumed snacks had a higher BMI (β = 0.51, p = 0.039). Conclusions: This research underscores the urgent need for public health initiatives addressing misconceptions, raising food label reading practices, while encouraging healthier consumption habits through educational campaigns. Additionally, the study’s insights will help assess the potential cumulative health impacts of artificial sweetener intake. Full article

A pilot study with 18 dairy farms in recharge areas of five vulnerable drinking water abstractions in the Dutch province of Overijssel aimed to reduce nitrate leaching risks to the upper meter of groundwater through improved farm management. The pilot employed a voluntary, mutual gain approach, promoting measures that enhanced both nutrient efficiency and groundwater quality. Over the research period (2011–2017), nitrogen surpluses on the soil balance declined significantly from 153 to 96 kg N per ha per year, achieving the target of 100 kg N per ha per year. Despite this decline, average nitrate concentrations in the upper meter of groundwater fluctuated annually, showing no significant reduction in grassland but a noticeable decrease in maize. Economic evaluation showed that relative fodder profitability (RFP) increased over time, suggesting positive financial effects of implemented measures, as acknowledged by participating farmers. However, the adoption of measures perceived as complex or less financially rewarding remained limited, highlighting the challenges of relying solely on voluntary implementation. The absence of farm-specific feedback on nitrate leaching emerged as a critical limitation, emphasizing the need for additional monitoring tools, such as residual soil nitrogen assessments, to provide actionable insights at the farm or field level. These findings underscore the potential for further reducing nitrate leaching through enhanced feedback systems, precise execution of measures, and collaborative efforts integrating farmer expertise and scientific knowledge. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the acute effects of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs)-containing electrolyte beverage (AE) on water–electrolyte balance, muscle damage, time to finish the final 5 km, and muscle strength compared to a standard commercially available carbohydrate–electrolyte sports beverage (CE), pure water (W), and no rehydration (N). Methods: Fourteen trained male participants (20 ± 2 years old) completed four randomized 21 km running trials. The participants were instructed to consume their drink (150 mL W, 150 mL CE, or 150 mL AE) or no rehydration (N) at 5 km, 10 km, and 15 km. Body mass and muscle strength were assessed, and blood samples were collected before and after exercise. Perceptual scales were administered during and after running. Blood electrolyte levels (sodium, potassium, and chloride) and creatine kinase (CK) concentration were analyzed. Results: The change in plasma volume with AE was significantly smaller than that with N (p < 0.05). Consuming AE maintained the best potassium balance (p < 0.05). Twenty-four hours after exercise, serum CK concentrations significantly elevated in N, W, and CE (p < 0.05), but did not reach statistical significance in the AE group (p > 0.05). Compared to N, consuming AE resulted in significantly less soreness 24 h after exercise (p < 0.05). There was no difference in time to finish the final 5 km (p > 0.05). Maximal voluntary isometric force output was significantly lower after exercise with N and W (p < 0.05) but not with CE or AE (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Consuming a BCAAs-containing sports beverage during a 21 km run can help reduce dehydration, maintain potassium balance, lower muscle damage, and prevent the decline in lower limb strength after 21 km running. Background/Objectives: Low quality diets are a risk factor for non-communicable diseases; therefore, improving diet quality is a public health and policy priority in the UK and elsewhere. Reformulating food/beverage products to make them healthier may be an effective approach. Evidence suggests that fiscal interventions, notably taxes/levies on soft drinks, can lead to reformulation but the evidence for voluntary or mandated non-fiscal interventions is less clear. We aimed to review and synthesise contemporary evidence to determine whether non-fiscal policies/interventions result in the reformulation of food/beverage products Methods: In April 2023, we systematically searched ten international academic and nine grey literature databases. We included real-world study designs, all nutrients, in- and out-of-home sectors, and studies published from 2013, to ensure policy relevancy. We excluded modelling studies. Using the Synthesis Without Meta-Analysis method we conducted vote counting of studies based on the direction of effect and narrative synthesis by intervention type. Risk of bias was assessed using a tool developed by the EPPI-Centre and quality was assessed using GRADE. Results: We included 77 real-world studies from 19 countries, reporting 100 non-fiscal policies/interventions. Most commonly, these were reduction targets (n = 44), front-of-pack labels (n = 23), and advertising standards (n = 9). Most interventions were voluntary (n = 67), compared to mandatory (n = 33), and focused on the in-home sector (n = 63). The vote counting results showed non-fiscal policies/interventions overall led to improvements in reformulation in 60/63 studies with a valid direction of effect (95%, 95% CI 0.869, 0.984, p < 0.001). Mandatory implementations were more successful than voluntary implementations with 15/15 showing an improvement (100%, 95% CI 0.796, 1], p < 0.001), compared 40/43 showing an improvement (93%, 95% CI 0.814, 0.976, p < 0.001). Most of the studies were of low quality, due to the observational nature of the studies. Sodium was the most commonly targeted nutrient (n = 56) and was found to be reformulated in most studies. Causation is difficult to establish from real-world studies, but evidence suggests that regulatory and multi-component strategies may be effective at driving reformulation. Conclusions: Non-fiscal policies/interventions can play an important role in driving reformulation, alongside fiscal measures. Adolescence is a critical period when the effects of ethanol and stress exposure are particularly pronounced. Argan oil (AO), a natural vegetable oil known for its diverse pharmacological benefits, was investigated for its potential to mitigate addictive-like behaviors and brain damage induced by adolescent intermittent ethanol intoxication (IEI) and unpredictable mild stress (UMS). From P30 to P43, IEI rats received a daily ip ethanol (3 g/kg) on a two-day on/two-day off schedule. On alternate days, the rats were submitted to UMS protocol. Next, a two-bottle free access paradigm was performed over 10 weeks to assess intermittent 20% ethanol voluntary consumption. During the same period, the rats were gavaged daily with AO (15 mL/kg). Our results show that IEI/UMS significantly increased voluntary alcohol consumption (from 3.9 g/kg/24 h to 5.8 g/kg/24 h) and exacerbated withdrawal signs and relapse-like drinking in adulthood. Although AO treatment slightly reduced ethanol intake, it notably alleviated withdrawal signs during abstinence and relapse-like drinking in adulthood. AO’s effects were associated with its modulation of the HPA axis (elevated serum corticosterone), restoration of amygdala oxidative balance, BDNF levels, and attenuation of neurodegeneration. These findings suggest that AO’s neuroprotective properties could offer a potential therapeutic avenue for reducing ethanol/stress-induced brain damage and addiction. Further research is needed to explore its mechanisms and therapeutic potential in alcohol use disorders. Full article

The aim of this contribution is to present a segmentation method for the identification of voluntary movements from inertial data acquired through a single inertial measurement unit placed on the subject’s wrist. Inertial data were recorded from 25 healthy subjects while performing 75 consecutive reach-to-grasp movements. The approach herein presented, called DynAMoS, is based on an adaptive thresholding step on the angular velocity norm, followed by a statistics-based post-processing on the movement duration distribution. Post-processing aims at reducing the number of erroneous transitions in the movement segmentation. We assessed the segmentation quality of this method using a stereophotogrammetric system as the gold standard. Two popular methods already presented in the literature were compared to DynAMoS in terms of the number of movements identified, onset and offset mean absolute errors, and movement duration. Moreover, we analyzed the sub-phase durations of the drinking movement to further characterize the task. The results show that the proposed method performs significantly better than the two state-of-the-art approaches (i.e., percentage of erroneous movements = 3%; onset and offset mean absolute error < 0.08 s), suggesting that DynAMoS could make more effective home monitoring applications for assessing the motion improvements of patients following domicile rehabilitation protocols.
